The Henry County baseball team took down Trimble County 7-0 on Tuesday, March 26 for its first win of the season.
The Wildcats held Trimble County without a hit through six innings. Baylor Nolin opened the game on the mound and struck out seven batters in four innings, and Camden Peyton stepped in to earn a strikeout in two innings.
“Overall the team played pretty well. They came together and were able to get the job done. Baylor and Camden started the week off right by throwing a combined no-hitter to grab us our first win on the season,” said head coach Walker Paris.
Offensively, the Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead.
After Nolin reached on an error and Jaylan Hortenbury singled on a bunt to third base to open the frame, Nolin scored on a ground out from Sawyer Yates.
During the next at-bat, Peyton reached on another Raider error, allowing Hortenbury to come across home and boost the margin to 2-0.
Henry County threatened to add to the lead late in the inning as well. The Wildcats loaded the bases on a pair of walks, but all three runners were left on base as Trimble County struck out its final batter faced.
Nolin took care of business in the top of the second inning, striking out all three batters to put the Wildcats back at the plate in a timely fashion.
Adding to his pitching success, Nolin earned a single to right field and scored two plays later on a Raider fielding error to push the Wildcat lead to 3-0.
Henry County continued to capitalize on Trimble County’s miscues as Peyton reached first on a fielding error on the next play.
Yet, Peyton and Yates remained on base at the end of the inning after the Raiders caught a shot from Logan Perdue at first base.
The Wildcats retired the side in order in the top of the third, but Trimble County returned the favor in the bottom half of the frame to keep the score at 3-0.
The Raiders earned a walk in the top of the fourth but failed to bring the runner home. Henry County’s defense stepped up after the walk for a ground out and a strikeout to close out the inning.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the inning to push the margin out to 5-0. Wyatt Ward scored with Hortenbury at the plate for the initial run of the frame, and Nolin came across home during a ground out from Peyton.
Trimble County’s offensive woes continued into the fifth inning, as the Wildcats held the Raiders to a three up, three down outing.
Henry County took advantage of another fielding error from the Raiders to send Drew Cole home and boost the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wildcats limited Trimble County to another three up, three down trip to the plate in the sixth inning before using an RBI double to left field from Yates to extend the lead to 7-0.
After Yates’ hit, the game entered a lightning delay, and weather conditions ultimately forced an early ending.
Hortenbury earned two runs and a hit for the Wildcats, and Nolin added three runs and a hit.
Yates chipped in a hit and two RBI and Ward finished with a run and a hit as well.
