Q&A with Coach Zach Adair

Q-Who are some of your top returning players, and why?

A-Savannah Mertz, because she can handle the ball well, has good quickness, and has the ability to shoot from behind the arc. Emily Bryant is key because she is a senior and a leader on our team. She is also the only inside player we have.

Q-Who are some newcomers on your team that have the chance to make an impact?

A-Taviana West. She is an 8th grader, can handle the ball really well and has great quickness. I think if she will put her mind to it that she could be the best defender on the team.

Q-What are some areas of strength this season?

A-We are mostly guards and over the last 4 weeks of practice I’ve seen a lot of improvement in their ball handling. I think our guard play this season can be a key for us. Another strength is the bond we have as a team. We continue to grow as a team.

Q-In what areas do you hope to see improvement this season?

A-They are young, so I would like to see an improvement in every aspect. But specifically I would like to see a huge improvement on defense. We are really going to have to rely on our defense to keep us in games.

Q-What are your team goals for the year, and why?

A-We want to compete in every game. I want us to be in the game during the last few minutes so we can give ourselves a chance to win. We are trying to change this program and the culture here. If we compete hard in every game, it will be a huge step forward for this program. We’ve talked about changing the program, so our goal is to really lay the foundation this season for a successful program for years to come.

Q-What would you like to say to your fans?

A-We hope to have their support. We have worked hard this season. Even when there have only been 3 or 4 players at practice we still put in the work. I think this team has a completely different attitude than in past years and they have a common goal to do well this season. I believe that this team is a team that they will enjoy to watch and cheer on. We want to be a team that you can be proud of.

Q&A with Coach Todd Gilley

Q-Who are some of your top returning players, and why?

A-Cheyenne Clark, Colleen Coomes, Megan Payton, Kim Barmore, Ashton Pennington, Ashley Craigmyle, Hailey Bramblett, Sophie Hughes, Sarah Foree

They were able to get valuable experience last year. Some have been seeing playing time for several years. Their chemistry has been outstanding and leadership has been spot on.

Q-Who are some newcomers on your team that have the chance to make an impact?

A-Shelby Mullins is a senior transfer from Oldham County. Aleah Tuggle has been showing signs that she could compete for some varsity time very soon. I also have to include Megan Payton in this category. She missed all of last year with a knee injury.

Q-What are some areas of strength this season?

A-Rebounding should be one of our main strengths. We have one of the biggest teams have had over the last few years and it’s not just our bigs that like to rebound. Chemistry is also such a plus for us. This group loves being together. We also have depth. We can go 11 deep.

Q-In what areas do you hope to see improvement this season?

A-Outside shooting…we have been working hard on the gun and some have been coming in before school to work on it. We do think it has improved greatly.

Q-What are your team goals for the year, and why?

A-Our number one goal is to focus on the process. If so the product will come. If you are not wanting to win the district you should not play.
Q-What would you like to say to your fans?

A-Give this bunch a chance and they will win your hearts.

Q&A with Coach Enoch Welch

Q-Who are some of your top returning players, and why?

A-We return all of our players except one.  We should be very experienced.  Landon, Chase, Dakota and Brad have a lot of experience at guard and Austin, James and Robbie played a ton as juniors on the block for us.

Q-Who are some newcomers on your team that have the chance to make an impact?

A-We feel that our Junior and Sophmore classes can step in and contribute along with our 8 seniors.  We have one new senior in Nacona Jeffries who should be anle to help us especially on the boards and defensively.  Jackson, Coleton, Buckley, Gavin, Ethan, Laymon, Bodie and Watson should also be able to step in and make an impact.  We have a new player, Mason Heightchew who moved in from Lexington who is big and strong so he could help too.  It is going to all remain a mystery until the games start and players begin to separate themselves as far as playing time goes.

Q-What are some areas of strength this season?

A-We should be deep and team chemistry seems very good right now.  All good teams have chemistry.

Q-In what areas do you hope to see improvement this season?

A-We need to be better defensively this year.  I hope that is the difference this year, to see that sense of urgency to get the stop defensively.

Q-What are your team goals for the year and why?

A-Our goals are the same every year.  District, Region, State.  One needs to be accomplished to achieve the next.

Q-What would you like to say to your fans?

A-We hope to provide an exciting brand of basketball this year.  As always we have some of the best fans in the 8th region.  We only hope our team shows the same passion as they do.
