After months of preparation, practice, and competitions, 23 Henry County Sharpshooters traveled to Wilmore and Berea on September 14 and 15 for the prestigious state Shooting Sports Championships. 1262 of the best shooting sports members in the state battled for the top spots in archery, pistol, rifle, black powder, and shotgun.

The Sharpshooters walked away with multiple individual and team awards, with the 15-18 age group repeating as state champions in both Shotgun and Black Powder.

“This team is successful because they’ve worked so hard to get to this point,” said Coach Dennis Campbell. “They have put in hundreds of hours of practice getting ready for this competition, and just seeing the progress they’ve made over the season is amazing.”

In the archery competition, Haley Hosey’s near-perfect scores earned her second place in both the Bowhunter and Target divisions in the 9-11 age group. She also scored 140 out of a possible 150 in Air Pistol for first place. She will receive a State Championship 4-H jacket to go along with her trophy.

The 12-14 age group was well represented as Emily Rice won second place out of 98 competitors in .22 pistol. Colt McGuire competed against 163 others to win third place in the Archery Bowhunter division.

Justin Yount took first place in Black Powder Rifle in the 15-18 age group while leading the team to its second straight title in this event. He will also receive a State Championship jacket.

In his final 4-H competition, Jordan Campbell placed second in Black Powder, and also placed third in Archery Bowhunter. On Sunday, he survived a four-way shoot-off for third place in shotgun.
