Henry Baughman of Smithfield won the prestigious Southern Open Tennis Championships — a Category II National Tournament in the men’s 70-and-older division in Jackson, Miss., May 15-18.
In his first matchup, Baughman defeated Willis Anderson of North Carolina (6-4, 7-6). Anderson is currently ranked No. 2 in the 9-state Southern. Baughman then defeated Courtney Henderson of Texas (6-3, 6-2) in the semifinals, and Nick Mackarenko of Georgia (6-4, 6-0) in the finals. Mackarenko is the former No. 1 ranked player in the Southern.
In doubles, Baughman and Herb Kays lost in the semifinals to Redd and Mackarenko (7-5, 6-2).
The previous weekend, Baughman reached the semifinals of the Atlanta Senior Invitational Tennis Championships — a Category II National Tournament — losing to the 70-and-over world champion, King Van Nostrand of Florida. In doubles, Baughman and Kays lost in the semifinals.
