Beef finishing workshop set for May 1

The Cooperative Extension Service is finalizing plans to hold a forage based beef finishing workshop at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the Shelby County Extension Office.  The information packed session will include lunch. Please hold the entire day for the session.

With more and more emphasis on locally grown food in our region, it fits that locally finished beef demand will increase.  This workshop focuses on type and breeds of beef, forage quality and animal nutrition, age of animal, taste, marketing strategies, and many other factors.

Third Thursday Thing

The Third Thursday Thing, April 19, at the KSU Mills Lane Farm will feature Soil Conservation and USDA-NRCS information.

With a bevy of speakers beginning at 10 a.m., you’ll learn about many programs and services, including crop insurance, EQIP, student programs, soil health and organics, grazing land conservation, and engineering practices.

Cattlemans’s meeting

Henry County Cattle producers are encouraged to mark their calendars and make plans to attend the April 23 meeting of the Henry County Cattleman’s Association.  Another beef based meal is planned to begin the evening at 6:30 p.m., followed by the vet , FSA, FFA, Phase I and Extension reports.  Special guest speaker will be Russell Hackley, Kentucky Forage Spokesperson, discussing his stocker/grazing programs.  Contact the Extension Office at 845-2811 to register.

CRP sign-up deadline is April 13

The Farm Service Agency announces the sign-up deadline for the Conservation Reserve Program is April 13. Accepted offers will become effective Oct. 1.  Producers with expiring contracts and producers with environmentally sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate their options under CRP.

Producers are urged to contact the local FSA service center at 845-2820 for additional information regarding CRP.
