Five Henry County Wildcat cross country runners traveled to the Horse Park on Saturday to participate in the Franklin County Invitational.
In the girls’ race Katherine Buckler was the first Cat to cross the finish line with a time of 24:59.16. It was Buckler’s first 5K race of the season because she has run in middle school races previously, a 3K distance.
Lily Golden was the second Lady Cat finisher with a time of 25:37.35. Katie Sutherland finished next for the Cats with 31:40.40.
In the boys’ race Brandon Handley ran a season best time of 20:41.46 and Chase Slone covered the distance in 20:46.02.
Coach Ricky Drawbaugh was pleased with the performances, which took place in adverse conditions.
“It was another successful meet in my opinion,” Drawbaugh said. “Katherine Buckler had a good race, leading the way for the girls. Lily and Katie ran about what they did the previous week. This course is usually 30 seconds or so slower than other courses, so when you take that into account, I was pleased with the girls.
“We had a 30 minute lightening delay right as the boys were on the start line, so they had to leave the line for safety reasons and 30 minutes later warm up to race again. That played with the boys. Chase had a solid race considering the delay and ran about the same time as last week. Brandon had the best race of the day, turning in a season best and if you take 30 seconds off for the course and conditions he would have a PR.
“We let the middle school kids have the weekend off to get the high school experience on the state course. I am still happy with the kids’ progress.”
