Studies show that when fathers actively contribute to the upbringing of their children in a positive and supportive way, the children do better in school, are more confident and have healthier self-esteems. Children and teens who feel secure and comfortable about themselves are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol or engage in sexual activity before marriage. This affirming encouragement has long lasting effects well into adulthood as children learn to make good decisions for a brighter future.
Fathers and Daughters
Raising girls has traditionally been thought of as a job best left to, well, women. Today we know more about the very important role of fathers in the lives of their daughters. A father is the first man his daughter knows. He has the power to influence how his daughter will later define a normal, healthy relationship with men. If her father is supportive, attentive and encouraging, she will come to expect that standard of treatment from other men in her life. If her father is disconnected or unconcerned, she is more likely to accept any form of attention or affection which could lead to poor choices and an unhealthy life style.
Fathers and Sons
Just as raising girls is not solely the responsibility of the mother, raising sons is not left only to the father. However, few will dispute the significant impact that a father has in the life of his son. A father sets the standard for what is acceptable in terms of masculinity. A compassionate and supportive father knows when its time to press his son forward through a difficult or uncomfortable circumstance or when his son just needs a hug. Fathers model their masculinity to provide for and protect their family. They do not use their strength to intimidate or to hurt them.
Fathers and Mothers
By showing kindness and appreciation to the mother of his children, a father creates a stable and comfortable environment. Children who see their parents work respectfully through difficult circumstances learn the valuable lesson that life is not always easy or fair but there are true rewards that come with commitment and love.
The Henry County CARE Team is proud to be part of events that encourage the role of fathers as unique contributors to the family dynamics. The 3rd Annual Father-Daughter Dance was held Saturday, February 23rd at the Henry County Middle School. Approximately 350 fathers and daughters came out for an evening of music, dancing, pictures, refreshments and fun! Jeff Wolf, Heartland Entertainment, played all night as the girls and their dad's danced the Hokey Pokey, the Moccarana, the Chicken Dance, the Electric Slide, the YMCA and more. This spring, the 3rd annual father/son outdoors event will be held in celebration of their special relationship. Look for more details to be coming from your child's school.
