Eminence will host a city-wide yard sale from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, to coincide with National Garage/Yard Sale Day.

This is the first time Eminence has held a city-wide event of this kind.

Reverend Sharon Fields of the Eminence Christian Church presented the concept to the Eminence City Council after reading a magazine article publicizing the nationwide event. The council unanimously approved the idea and requested that she spearhead the effort.

Fields explained that Eminence Christian had made a decision to become a “green congregation” and take steps to become better stewards of the earth.

She said that the idea of a large-scale yard sale fit in with the goals of this ministry to reduce, reuse and recycle, and involve the larger community. “I thought this would get people to go through their material stuff and get rid of some of it,” Fields said.

There are several ways to participate. Individuals as well as whole streets can pool resources to trade, barter and sell. Merchants are invited to put excess inventory out on the sidewalk. Civic, church and school groups also are encouraged to participate. “It’s a good way to jump start fund raising,” Fields said.

Fields noted that it is an opportunity for folks to get their stuff out of the way without it ending up in a landfill. “It’s a chance to bring a little money in just by housecleaning,” she said.
