When she teed off in the first round of the State Golf Tournament Tuesday, Maddie Hensley was the youngest individual qualifier.
Hensley a 6th grader will be joined by three other youngsters from across the state. Gracie Ann Parrott of Green County and Zoe Crum of Johnson Central are also 6th graders. Rylea Marcum of Scott County is a fifth grader and the youngest in the field. But each of these young ladies made it on the strength of being from a qualifying team.
Only Hensley did it by making the cut as an individual.
Meanwhile, sophomore Mackenzie Peyton who has been ranked as one of the top high school golfers all season looks to improve on her 2011 finish. Peyton tied for 28th place last year while shooting a two-day total of 168, which was 24-over par. This year Peyton has shot in the 80’s only once. That was an 81 on the tough Long Run Course that hosted the regional tournament last week.
The state tournament is a two-day event. All teams and individuals that qualified out of regional tournaments played yesterday and the 20 lowest individuals not on one of the 11 teams that qualify for day two will advance to the final round today.
Results of the state golf tournament will appear in next week’s issue.
