In a time where almost every infomercial on TV offers a new and improved weight loss tool it is easy to get caught up in the hype. However, the key to weight loss is frustratingly simple… cut your calories. There are not any fancy tricks or “magic bullets,” it’s just old fashioned arithmetic. Burn more than you consume. Easy right? Well maybe it is a little harder than it sounds but there are resources available to make losing weight a less arduous process. Not only do these resources simplify your life but they are also free!
The best way to make sure that you are eating fewer calories than you use is to keep track of the calories you are eating. Here are three ways that require minimal energy and do not cost you anything.
Sparkpeople.com offers many benefits to its members, but the most important benefit is the use of their “trackers.” The trackers help dieters keep up with their weight, the level of nutrition they are gaining from their food, and their level of physical activity. With these three tools you are constantly informed of where you stand with your weight loss. One of my favorite features is the fact that there is a free app available to download for people with smart phones. It is easy to track wherever you go.
Myfitnesspal.com is very similar to sparkpeople.com; you track your weight, your food, and your exercise. Again, similar to sparkpeople, there is a free app for smart phones.
Journaling is a great way to keep track of how many calories you are eating every day. The best part is, all you need is a pen and paper and access to the nutritional label of the food you ate. It may take a little more effort but it still works!
All of these tools not only track your progress but also show you some of the eating habits you have developed. Once you observe that certain foods are hindering your progress you are more likely to avoid them. Whatever you chose will work. You just have to stick to it, write down everything, and watch the pounds disappear!
