Henry County’s Cody Hinkel picked a good night to step up his game as he muscled his way to 23 points, pulled down numerous rebounds and stayed cool down the stretch to propel the Wildcats to a 59-54 victory over South Oldham in the 8th Region tournament.

The stars were aligned for Hinkel last Thursday night on his home court, which allowed the Wildcats to win their first regional tournament game in exactly 20 years and advance to the semifinals.

The Cats brought an impressive resume into the 8th Region — a regional-best 21-8 record, three tournament victories, an appearance in the All “A” Classic state tournament and numerous down-to-the-wire wins — but they turned the most heads with what was their biggest win in a big-time environment. According to reports in previous Locals, before the 1989 season Henry’s last 8th Region tournament win was in 1965 with an overall tournament record of 7-15 during a 47-year span.

The Wildcats were due for a tournament win and this team delivered.
