A meditation on patriotism, God and country

-A A +A
By Rev. Michael Duncan

In the summer of 1969, I was working for Sears in Jackson, Tenn. The year before that, Martin Luther King had been assassinated 80 miles away in Memphis; and a few months later in 1968, Robert Kennedy was assassinated in California.

The country was being rocked by racial tensions and demonstrations against the war in Vietnam.

I proudly wore a U.S. flag pin on my lapel. One of my fellow employees took exception to it.
