Henry 34, Owen 27: The Henry County Middle School boys’ seventh-grade basketball team took to the floor against Owen County on Dec. 7 hoping to avenge a 13-point loss earlier in the season, and that’s exactly what the Cats did with a 34-27 win.

Henry was ahead by nine points at the half, thanks to an intense defense.

“The pressure defense was very good and we were not intimidated by their big men,” HCMS coach Connie Taylor said. “Mason Fish took away their number one scorer and Coleton Aneszko played well on the front of the press allowing easy transition baskets.”

The Cats only scored one basket in the third quarter but were much more aggressive during the fourth quarter. Brennen Peniston and Ethan Tuggle hit big free throws down the stretch allowing the Cats the victory.

Scoring was led by Fish with 14 points, Jacob Buckley with six points, Aneszko and Peniston with five points each, Tuggle with three points and Gavin Black with one point.

Trimble 27, Henry 25: The HCMS boys’ seventh-grade team lost a heart breaker to Trimble County on Dec. 10 as Trimble knocked down a jumper with 12 seconds on the clock and won 27-25. A slow start caused the Cats to trail 9-0 early before they closed the gap to just one point at the half. Henry then outscored Trimble 11-4 during the third quarter but had a tough time converting in the fourth.

“We had great looks,” HCMS coach Connie Taylor said. “The guys ran their offense to perfection and players had wide open opportunities to score from the blocks. The more we missed, the tighter we played. Trimble double teamed Mason Fish and we threw the ball away. Instead of playing solid defense moving our feet on the press, we waved at them as they went by.”

Scoring was led by Fish with eight points, Jacob Buckley with six points, Coleton Aneszko with five points, Gavin Black with four points and Ethan Tuggle with two points.
