A New Castle man has been charged with second degree murder after a weekend argument turned deadly.
Robert Steven Elston, 54, of New Castle, was charged in the death of Joseph D. Burch. Elston entered a not guilty plea in Henry County District Court Monday.
Judge Jerry Crosby set Elston’s bail at $1 million. Elston remains lodged in the Carroll County Regional Detention Center, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 14. An attorney from the public defender’s office will represent Elston.
According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, Elston and Burch, reported acquaintances, were in a verbal argument prior to the shooting.
The incident, which took place at the Osage Court apartment complex where Elston lives, happened at around 3:24 Sunday afternoon. The reason for the argument is unknown, and Elston was arrested at the scene without incident.
KSP responded to the scene after a witness called 911. Burch was pronounced dead at the scene by Henry County Coroner Jimmy Pollard.
According to KSP Public Affairs Officer Seth Willis, a handgun was involved in the shooting. He also said that while the two men knew each other, they were not friends.
The case remains under investigation by KSP Detective Kevin Johnson.
