New Castle Cafe owners Marlene Brees and son, Mark, are keeping the welcome mat out six nights a week until 8 p.m. and residents are eating it up.
“We’ve been doing pretty good in the evenings,” Marlene Brees said.
The dinner menu includes a choice of five main-course meals including country-fried steak, oven-baked turkey and pork chops.
Homemade spaghetti sauce over pasta with a choice of soup or salad and garlic bread is a reasonable $4.99. The highest priced entree is a six-ounce New York strip steak plus six shrimp. It is accompanied by a choice of baked, mashed or french-friend potatoes, one vegetable, bread and choice of soup or salad for $9.99.
Breakfast and burgers/sandwiches from the lunch menu are served anytime. “I hand-make the hamburgers every day,” Brees said. She said they have added a French Dip and a Reuben sandwich to the menu as well as a Chicken Caesar Salad.
Lunch patron Larry Singleton said he appreciated the option of getting soup or salad with his meal.
“They also serve two kinds of fish,” he said, “and make breakfast omelets.”
Brees bought the building, which previously was home to Mom’s Restaurant, from Nancy Tipton after Tipton opened a second location in Pendleton. “Nancy was going to run both,” Brees said, “but it got to be too much.”
Brees has a background in restaurant management. She and Mark both love to cook. “My son wanted to own a restaurant and wanted me to go in on it,” Brees said. “It’s been a good thing.”
