All Henry County farmers and landowners are reminded that the Phase I Tobacco Money Cost Share Program is about to begin. We’ve just been notified that the Kentucky Agriculture Development Board gave the go-ahead this past Friday, May 17, for the Henry County Cattleman’s Association to serve as program administrator for approximately $243,000 of Henry County Agriculture Development Funds to be offered through the County Agriculture Investment Program.
Appearing elsewhere in this edition of the Henry County Local is the official legal advertisement for the KADF Call for Farmer Applications. This ad will also appear in the May 29 edition, with the official application period announced as June 3 through June 18. The ads will contain the complete information concerning the 10 Cost-Share program areas being offered, with information concerning program contact numbers and dates.
This marks the 13th year that Phase I Tobacco Settlement Agreement Funds have been made available to Henry County Farmers, largely through 50 percent cost share reimbursement projects to improve infrastructure on local farms. More than $4 million in KADF funds has been utilized in Henry County. Every Henry County landowner is eligible to apply for the funding each year. Because of the limitation of funds, we have always had several more applications than can be funded at a $2,500 maximum per farming operation level. Successful applications accumulate a higher point score based on a uniform producer application and scoring system supplied by the Kentucky Agriculture Development Board.
For most farmers, the dates to remember then are June 3-18, the period of time in which applications are available at the Henry County Extension Office. After the deadline date of June 18, Program Administrator Laraine Staples and the Henry County Cattleman’s Association will be scoring all applications, with successful applicants notified by around the end of June or the first of July. Contact the Henry County Extension Office at 845-2811 for further information.
Ky Forage & Grassland Field Day – August 1
The annual Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council Field Day will be Thursday, August 1, with supper at Rivercrest Farm, 1904 Mayo Lane, Prospect. This is the farm which hosted the Regional Beef Field Day about three years ago, showing the efforts of owner Caldwell Willig and farming partner Danny Jacobs to establish a premier beef genetics program and an extended season grazing program to produce high quality direct marketed slaughter beef to local consumers.
Participants will tour the farm and learn about: Using warm season annual forages; Forages and tips for pasture poultry production; Opportunities with eastern gamagrass; Hay quality and hay testing; Late summer pasture seeding; and making forages work on your farm
This is a great opportunity to see and learn about managing pasture and hay on your farm. UK Extension Specialists and Agents, and KY Department of Agriculture Staff will be featured guest speakers for this field day.
Supper will be provided by local cattlemen’s associations. We’ll include reminders of this local field day in the next few weeks.
