Shelby Ray, an 8th grade student at HCMS, competed in the Henry County Farm Bureau spelling bee on Feb. 7, where she took first place. This qualified her to compete in the Kentucky Derby Festival spelling bee on March 10 at the PNC Club at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Stadium. Ray was among 64 contestants from 63 counties across Kentucky and Indiana that competed. The winner was Emily Keaton from Pikeville who properly spelled the word, Oppugn.
