Henry County Track Clinics

Henry County High School track coach Sedrick Williams and his high school athletes will host track clinics for the younger kids in the county this Friday during school hours. They will be at New Castle Elementary at 9 a.m., at Eastern Elementary at 12:15 p.m. and at Campbellsburg Elementary at 2 p.m.

Led by the varsity athletes, the elementary-aged students will be introduced to the track and field events. Each school visit is split into two 30-minute sessions with grades K-2 scheduled for the first half and grades 3-5 scheduled for the second.

Also, an elementary track meet for those athletes will be hosted on the high school’s track on Tuesday night, June 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Events contested for grades K-1 include 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, long jump and softball throw. For grades 2-5, events include 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4x100 relay (for grades 4-5 only), long jump and softball throw. For more information, contact Coach Williams at (518)878-2853.

Henry County Middle School Baseball

The newly-formed Henry County Middle School baseball team closes out its first season with the conference championship this week. Coached by Brent New, the 5-6 Henry squad plays Owen County this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner plays Bondurant on Thursday night with the finals being held on Saturday. All games are played at the park in Oldham County next to Oldham County High School. Oldham, Owen, Henry, Bondurant, Carroll County and Shelby County are part of the conference tournament, which is the season finale for the schools. Check next week’s Local for results.

Catfish Tourney

The Henry County Rod and Gun Club will host a catfish tournament on May 29-30 on its lake off of Sunnyside Road. The 12-hour tournament will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday night and finish at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning. First place receives $150, second receives $100 and third receives $50. There will also be a Biggest Fish competition with cash winnings in that category, too. Anyone is eligible to compete. For more information, call Westend Sports at (502)845-7256.

Life Center 3-on-3 Basketball

The Eminence Community Life Center will host a free 3-on-3 basketball tournament this Friday starting at 5 p.m. Teams do not have to sign up before the tournament. Contact the Community Life Center at (502)845-2135 for more information.

Henry County Girls’ Basketball Camp

Todd Gilley will host his Henry County girls’ basketball camp on June 7-10 at the high school. The camp is for all those entering second through eighth grades next school year, and starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until noon daily. The cost is $40 at the door.

Henry Baughman

Playing in this event every year since 1982, Henry Baughman of Smithfield won the Southern Open Category 2 National Tennis Championship doubles title over the weekend in Jackson, Miss.

Playing with the singles champion, Lester Sack, they won this event for the second consecutive year, defeating Rob Fischer of California and Hill Griffin of Georgia (6-2, 6-4) in the finals. Earlier, they defeated Bill Russell and John Nixson of Missouri (6-1, 6-0), and Bob Garmon and Bob Johnson of Missouri (8-3, then shortened because of the rain) in the semifinals.

Baughman also finished third in singles. He defeated Bill Heist of Missouri (6-1, 6-0) and George Baker of Louisiana (6-1, 7-6) before losing to Griffin (4-6, 4-1) in the semifinals. He closed out with a win over Ben Varn of North Carolina (4-6, 5-2) for third place.
