Henry Baughman of Smithfield won the Category 2 National Public Parks Tennis 70s Doubles Championship in Columbia, SC, on Aug. 2. Baughman partnered with Lester Sack (LA) to defeated Jim Fernstrom and Neil Vogot (SC) 6-1, 6-1 and in the finals defeated Ron Kieger and Dave Sloan (SC) 6-3, 6-1.
In singles play, Baughman defeated Joe Pundt (Germany) 6-1, 6-1 and No. 1 seeded Bob Mathis (FL) 6-3, 6-0, before losing to Lester Sack 4-6, 2-6.
On Aug. 7-9 in the Kentucky Closed in Louisville, Baughman defeated Elton Wiest, 6-2, 6-1 and brother Jim, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals of the 70s singles. Baughman teamed with his brother Jim to defeat Lonnie Mudd and Frank Weaver, 6-3, 6-2, and then defeated Jim Putlak and Jack Russell, 6-1, 6-1, in the 70s doubles finals.
The Henry County Youth Soccer Association will have registration this Saturday at the soccer pavilion at Harry Hill Park from 9 a.m. until noon.
The soccer organization is a recreational league that had 18 teams last year for players ranging from 4-12. The league is designed to teach kids at any age about soccer. It is held at Harry Hill Park but will eventually be moved to the new park in New Castle.
For those interested in joining, the Henry County cross-country team is practicing at Harry Hill Park daily following school. The team is open to elementary students from New Castle, Campbellsburg and Eastern, along with students at Henry County Middle School and Henry County High School. This year’s Friends For Michael 5K is Saturday, Sept. 26, starting in front of Henry County High School at 9 a.m. The 3.1-mile road course starts on Hwy. 55 and turns left on Hwy. 421. The turnaround point to the out-and-back course is just before the fair grounds, and the finish line is on the high school’s track.
