I feel I need to respond to statements made by speakers at the Henry County Democrat Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner, as reported in the Henry County Local.
Jerry Lundergan, father of Allison Lundergan Grimes, said “The Democratic Party of Kentucky has stood by and let the Republicans identify who we are.” No, y’all have done a pretty good job of that on your own. This summer’s Democratic National Convention showed everyone what the Democratic Party stands for.
Mr. Lundergan went on to say: “Let me tell you what I don’t think Kentuckians stand for — we don’t stand for people trying to take away our Social Security benefits. We don’t stand for people trying to take away the educational benefits of our young people. We don’t stand for the Republicans in Washington, D.C., taking away the rights of hard working men and women, and then not passing an ag bill for our farmers across Kentucky.”
Later, Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Dan Logsdon said “We’ve got to stop worrying so much about the lies they tell about us and start telling the truth about them.”
Let’s stop the lies and the scare tactics, and let’s really be honest.
Republicans do not want to take away anyone’s Social Security. When SS was established, life expectancy was 60, and then Social Security kicked in at 65. I don’t think the original intent is what we have today. Social Security is broke. There is no money and yet we keep spending money we don’t have. That is not to say we roll grandma off a cliff, as the Democrats will have you believe Republicans want to do. What Republicans want to do is fix the problem. Let me have the money I have put into Social Security and let me find ways to invest it for my retirement.
The Republicans do not want to take away educational benefits for young people. We need to find better ways to invest in our children’s education. A good start would be to do away with the Department of Education, and put control back in the hands of the local school boards and parents.
Republicans do not want to take away the rights of hard working men and women. The Republicans are all about the individual being successful, and will fight for the rights of all hard working men and women. President Calvin Coolidge said it best: “I want the people of America to be able to work less for the government — and more for themselves.”
If you have not heard this before the Republican Party is for less government, lower taxes, and being fiscally conservative. The government we have today, is not the government our founding father originally envisioned.
In my heart of hearts, I believe we all want what is best for this nation. There are Democrats and Republicans who are honestly trying. Let’s stop the power struggle. Instead of worrying who is in control, and mudslinging, let’s find a way to roll up our sleeves and work together to bring America back.
