For a few years I was always eager to help with town days and benefits here in Henry County just because I enjoyed doing them. A few months ago the tables turned, my mother was diagnosed for the second time with breast cancer. Never the kind of news anyone wants to receive! I knew money had been tight and now I knew it would just get worse. I decided to ask my friends and family to help. I called the Buckskins Band and asked if they would play for a benefit to help with the never ending medical expenses that were adding up by playing a benefit dance. In the mean time my husband asked the Sugarfoot Band. Both bands never once thought about it, but jumped at the opportunity and offered to play. We held the benefit dance on Feb. 22 at the Simpsonville community center. Despite the weather and sickness that seemed to be controlling everyone, we had an amazing turn out. The money raised has been a tremendous help to my mother. She has not had the worry of how she will begin to pay the numerous bills, but instead she is able to concentrate on healing. I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped and came out to support my family! I never thought I would have been the one asking for people to help my family, but it just goes to show, no one knows what the future holds.
After going through what my family has endured in the past few months I know what hardship cancer can bring to someone; emotionally, physically and financially. With that being said I am asking that everyone come out to support the children and family of Marilyn Downey this Friday from 7-12 p.m. at the 4-H building in New Castle. You never know when tragedy will knock at your door. This family needs our support to make their benefit a success, please join us!
