In an attempt to continue to build soccer in the county, former Henry County High School players John Harp and Josh Clark have organized a soccer game scheduled for this Saturday, which the duo titled the Turkey Cup.
The game will be played at Harry Hill Park starting at 3 p.m. and lasting until around 6 p.m. Anyone in Henry County is eligible to play with Harp and Clark dividing two equal teams before the Turkey Cup kicks off – those showing up late will also be put on one of the two teams as the game progresses.
Harp said they came up with the idea because people usually play football during Thanksgiving week but they wanted to go the soccer route to keep up the interest in the sport.
“This is the first year we’re doing it and I think there should be a lot of people out there,” said Harp, who currently plays soccer at Union College. “We’ve talked about it to different people and they seem interested. It should be fun.”
Harp and Clark were instrumental in starting a boys’ soccer program at Henry County High School for their senior season in 2008. Harp then redshirted his freshman season at Union College in 2009 and plans to officially play for the Bulldogs next fall. Union ended their season two weeks ago with a loss in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Bulldogs finished third in the conference during the regular season.
While at Union, Harp, along with Clark, decided to host the Turkey Cup at Harry Hill Park the weekend after Thanksgiving. Those interested in playing in the first annul event should show up at the park before the 3 p.m. start.
