What are you doing to beat the heat?

Hooboy has it been hot lately. Sure, July and August are supposed to be scorchers, but we’re approaching 50 days so far this summer that have charted 90-degree days or higher.

As I said to my husband last week, it’s wicked hot out there. Hades himself surely is looking for some cool air right now.

No doubt ice cream sales are up right now, as are electric bills as we struggle to stay cool. Box fans, stand fans and oscillating fans probably are working overtime.

The recent heat has left me thinking fondly of my youth, particularly the years we lived in Tucuson, Ariz.

There, the true height of summer was measured in one great televised event. Each of the television stations in the city would compete to see who could fry an egg on the sidewalk first.

Later, it was who could fry an egg on the hood of a car, or a picnic table, so on and so forth.

We had a couple of different methods for escaping the heat there, including, of course, spending what seemed like the whole day at the local swimming pool.

It was that, or escape to the nearby Santa Catalina Mountains for moderately cooler air.

During my college years, in Evansville, Ind., I suffered through the summers in a house with no air conditioning.

There, the options for escaping the heat included daily trips to the freezing cold weight room at the University of Evansville, or camping out in the school’s computer lab.

There, perhaps my favorite method for beating the heat was late afternoon matinee movies at the $2 theater.

But what’s your favorite method for beating the heat? What are you doing to stay cool amid this monster heat wave?
