When will the Age of Ignorance end?

-A A +A

Joseph Yates

Spring better break soon, or I’m going to. There seems to be a vast amount of stupid dripping out of the ether lately, causing me no end of consternation. This is not your everyday garden variety dim-wittedness—it is a rarefied breed of stupid. I’m talking about a slothful yet reckless kind of nimrod: thick-headedness wrapped in a special type of belligerence that can’t be pried loose with a crowbar.

Just the other day, I was in one of our local eateries poking scrambled eggs in my mouth while pretending to read the newspaper, when I heard something I had not heard for a while. It went like this: “Blah, blah, well I guess the president and his Muslim buddies will take care of that one...” Huh? Unbelievable. When I hear stuff like that I want to walk over to the fella that said it and hold a small mirror in front of his mouth to see if a little mist shows up.

I really thought this whopper had bit the dust. But after reading about yet another Fox News-staged “Obamacare testimonial” getting busted, I decided to do a little research. I discovered that as recently as July 2012, 17 percent of all Americans think President Obama is a Muslim. That’s about one in six living, breathing adults. No telling how many still believe Iraq was behind the September 11 attacks.

But…doesn’t everybody know that President Obama raised taxes on us hard-working Americans? No. The truth is, your federal tax rates are now the lowest they have been in 30 years.

Although the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other reputable agencies have stated that the warming of the climate is unequivocal and is “due primarily to human-induced emissions of heat-trapping gases,” Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, has written a book entitled: The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future. And, for extra credit, he believes that this whole separation of church and state thing is the ‘second’ biggest hoax to be perpetrated on the citizenry. This goober, mind you, is a United States Senator.

Obama is coming to get your guns. Well, that explains the rise in gun sales since his inauguration—except he’s not and never was.

No matter the setting, whether a restaurant, a holiday get-together, (by the way, is my obnoxious uncle at your Thanksgiving dinner, too?), a church social or cocktail party, bat bleep crazy is everywhere—and has been for a while. In fact, the time has come to name this phenomenon.

Heard of the New Deal? Remember the Great Society? Welcome to a new political era that I have christened “The Great Society of the New Walking Dead.” Here’s the textbook definition: “A period in American political history, beginning in about 2008, in which blatantly, unequivocally false, bogus and untrue assertions of fact were able, even after being pummeled, hacked, strangled and brutally beaten with a big Louisville Slugger, to reanimate and continue to walk through our political discourse. Only a vicious blow to the cranial region annihilating the brain of the untrue assertion would destroy it permanently.”

As for me, until this current “Age of Ignorance” runs its course, I expect to spend my dotage ducking from those dang Obamacare death panels. Which reminds me, when are all those extra IRS agents gonna get here?

These rampant untruths are so obnoxious that our situation would be funny, if it weren’t so scary. As Dr. King said in a 1963 compilation of his sermons, Strength to Love, “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

Spend five minutes on the Internet, and you’ll discover how much these Tea-Partiers love to cite the great deist Thomas Jefferson. But if you read closely, and dig beneath the ‘sound-bite’ quotes, you will discover that Jefferson was never able to separate education from governance. Today I am stealing one of his quotes, and I will not give it back: “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free…it expects what never was and never will be.”

Lose the ignorant. Turn off the TV. Read a book.
