Where have all the snowmen gone?

-A A +A
By Jonna Spelbring Priester

With all due respect to Mother Nature, please, turn off the snow machine. Well, okay, more accurately, don’t turn on the ice machine again.

While some of our residents may still be without power, I count my blessings that we were only out for about half a day.

When our power conked out just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, Derek and I huddled up with extra blankets, and the cats, and read. All day.

We were a little stir crazy — not being able to check e-mail, or Facebook, or play a video game or two.

Ever so often, we cranked up the Red Cross emergency radio to hear the latest forecast, press conference or announcements.

We yelled at the radio, in unison, when the WHAS-11 AM station declared that anyone wanting more information about emergency shelters could check the WHAS-11 Web site.

We contemplated building a snowman. Deciding it was just too darn cold, and our gloves not thick enough, we huddled up under the blankets again, and read.

And when it got dark, we read some more.

But in the days that followed, as we ventured out, something really bothered me.

Nobody, it seemed, built a snowman in our neighborhood. Sure, it was icy, but all the better for a well-packed snowman, right?

In fact, in driving around, I’ve not seen a single snowman - though I’ll admit I haven’t veered too far off of main roads for fear of getting stuck somewhere.

When Derek and I were children, to pass up such a prime Frosty building opportunity was almost shameful.

And so, with all apologies to Pete Seger, and Peter, Paul and Mary ...

Where have all the snowmen gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the snowmen gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the snowmen gone?

The children didn’t build them this time around

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

Where have all the children gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the children gone?

Long time ago

The televisions have taken them, nearly every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

So my song writing efforts didn’t go much farther than that, which probably is a good thing.

As I’m sure we’ll get more snow in the coming weeks and I hope we see a few snowmen. In fact, if you build one (or built one last week) send us a picture. We’ll run the best  of the best in the paper.

Happy building!
