  • Make a successful breakfast plan

    We all know that breakfast is important so, what can we do to improve our chances of consuming a healthy breakfast before we face the world?  We need to plan ahead.  Just like we pack lunches the night before and set up our crock-pot for supper, we need to plan for our morning meals.

    Steps to Breakfast Success:

    • Add breakfast items to your grocery list: oats, whole grain cereals, fresh, frozen, dried and/or canned fruits and veggies, low-fat cheese, and skim milk, almond, soy, or coconut milk and light yogurt.

  • EQIP applications due soon

    Henry County Farmers/Landowners are encouraged to visit the NRCS office in New Castle now to receive information and apply for conservation technical assistance and possible financial funding opportunities.  Applications for Environmental Quality Incentives Program will be in the Jan. 18, 2013, ranking period.  The application process for 2008 Farm Bill conservation programs is continuous, but funding selections are made at specific times during the year.  

  • Teen retreat approaches


    The Distrtict 3 Teen Retreat is just around the corner.
    The retreat will be Jan. 18-19, 2013, at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott in Northern Kentucky. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m., with fun filled workshops and plenty of time to get to know other teens throughout the fourteen county district.  Friday evening there will be a movie and snack get together as well as time to swim in the indoor pool.  On Saturday morning there will be two additional workshops.  

  • The economic outlook for agriculture is bright

    Last week, I had the chance to attend the Commodity Day of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Annual meeting in Louisville.  State and national experts discuss new findings and directions for a variety of farm enterprises through short conferences through the day.  I was able to attend the tobacco conference, the economic outlook conference and the forage conference.  Other well attended offerings were:  dairy, equine, feed grains, beef, horticulture, forestry and natural resources.

  • 4-H livestock judging opportunities abound

    4-H livestock judging is a great way for young people to learn more about the animals they love and learn valuable life skills, such as decision making and critical thinking, in the process.

    One of the great things about livestock judging is you only need to have an interest in livestock to participate. Owning livestock or coming from an agricultural background are not participation requirements.

  • HC Farm Bureau awarded for membership and achievement

    The Henry County Farm Bureau was recognized for outstanding membership and program achievement during the recent 93rd Kentucky Farm Bureau annual meeting in Louisville.  Terry Rowlett, center, accepts the award from David S.   • Kitchen mysteries: Is it better to tear or cut lettuce?

    Is it better to tear lettuce leaves or cut them?

    Most salad lovers will tell you that a torn leaf lasts longer, while a cut lettuce leaf turns brown faster.

    The rationale behind this is that, when torn, the leaf breaks along the natural boundaries between cells, whereas a knife cuts right through cells causing more damage and quicker browning.

    Despite this theory, however, there appears to be no real difference in browning between a cut leaf and a torn one. So, whether salad greens are cut or torn are of personal preference.
