  • Think twice before using instant tax refund

    Instead of waiting for tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service, nearly 10 million consumers, many from low- to moderate-income families, borrow against part or all of their expected tax refunds. These refund loans are heavily marketed by paid tax preparers and immediately put cash into the consumer’s hands, making it seem to be a quick and “painless” way to get cash.

  • Deadline to sign up for shooting sports camp is Feb. 24

    The 2012 4-H State Shooting Sports Camp will be held at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp from April 4-7.

    This is a statewide camp open to all youth in fourth through eighth grades.  

    Certified instructors have been recruited to present classes and range work.

    Each camper will learn responsible, safe use of firearms and how to shoot in the six disciplines of the program:  rifle, trap, archery, black powder, hunter challenge and pistol.

  • ‘Pesticide Card’ needed for certain chemicals

    If you need to purchase and use restricted use pesticides in the upcoming growing season, you may need to renew (or get for the first time) your Private Pesticide Applicator Certification. 

    The ‘Pesticide Card’ is good for three years.  The Henry County Extension Office is offering a certification class from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Feb. 16. There is no fee for the program.  As always, it helps us in our meeting planning if you contact us at 845-2811 to let us know your intentions to attend.

  • Farmers Market meeting is Feb. 21

    It will be time to start planting gardens before long!!  So we have scheduled the organizational meeting of the Henry County Farmers Market for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Extension Office.

    If for some reason you cannot attend that night but are still interested in receiving information from the Farmers Market please be sure to give me a call so we will keep you in the loop. We normally correspond most often with email but if you do not have email we also send regular mail be sure to let us know which you prefer.

  • Renovating pastures is easy in February

    One of the cheapest ways to improve pastures and hay fields is also one of the easiest.  The process we know as pasture renovation is simply adding legumes to existing cool-season grass pastures and hay fields.  

    It’s inexpensive because with the addition of nitrogen fixing legumes into the field, we can save on expensive nitrogen fertilizers, and at the same time, we get a boost in both yield and quality of the forage from the field.

  • 4-H students attend retreat

    This past weekend teens across 14 counties gathered in Northern Kentucky to develop leadership skills, get to know each other better and have some fun.

    District 3 stretches from Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties to Pendleton, and down to Bullitt County. The size of the district makes it hard for teens to get together for a day conference, so for the past few years a winter weekend has been planned. Six teens from Henry County participated in the event: Connor Toole, Nathan Carroll, Renee Toole, Christen Crowe, Kennedy Fitzgerald and Savannah Mertz.

  • Extension to host microprocessor workshop

    The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services are partnering to support farm friendly legislation. House Bill 391 and Farmers Market Legislation allows Kentucky farmers who grow and harvest produce to process value-added products and sell them from designated farmers markets, certified roadside stands and the processors’ farms. There are two processing categories in H.B. 391, homebased processors and homebased microprocessors.

  • Despite dry summer, county saw 61 inches of rain in 2011

    During the 2011 growing season, several of my columns mentioned the fairly severe drought in Henry County which occurred in July and August. These months are prime growing season days, with several critical processes taking place in our crops and vegetables.  We suffered diminished yields in virtually all crops, including corn, soybeans, tobacco, vegetables, fruits, hay and pasture.

  • One acre at a time

    Nearly all Henry County landowners have some portion of their land in trees.  This wooded portion can be just a fraction of an acre here or there, or it may be a sizeable area consisting of dozens or even hundreds of acres.   In fact, Henry County is nearly 25 percent covered in woodlands, with uses covering the gamut from wasteland to recreation to well managed timber.
