  • Reasons to bone up on calcium

    ]There are 206 reasons we need to consume sufficient amounts of calcium during our lives. Do you know why?
    It is because calcium helps build and maintain each of the 206 bones in our bodies. Calcium also helps us develop strong teeth. And a small amount is needed for regulatory functions such as maintaining a normal heart beat.
    From birth to age 20, our bones are in an active growth phase. During the first 10 years of growth, most of a child’s dietary calcium goes to develop strong, dense bones and permanent teeth.

  • Having tomato problems this summer?

    One of the greatest pleasures many gardeners have is their bounty of tomatoes. Right off the vine, under some cottage cheese, or sliced thick over a big juicy grilled hamburger, anyone who loves fresh tomatoes is in a bit of heaven right now. But tomatoes don’t always grow with no problems, and we’ve had a lot of tomato questions this year. Let’s take a few moments to discuss some of the problems, causes, and some solutions.

  • It’s time for Cloverville at the state fair

    It is time for the Kentucky State Fair and Cloverville will be in full swing.

    This year, the state fair is from Aug. 15-25.  Cloverville is an annual attraction of every Kentucky State Fair. Located in the West Hall of the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Cloverville offers an opportunity for 4-H’ers to showcase their abilities and compete for statewide ribbons and awards.

  • Make better drink choices — more water, less sugar

    Most of us realize the importance of keeping sugars and fats to a minimum in our diets, but often we only apply that to the foods we eat. The types of drinks we are consuming could be adding empty calories and causing us to gain extra pounds.

    Consider this: a medium full-fat mocha adds 400 calories to your diet while a 20-ounce soda, on average, contains 250 calories and a fruit drink adds 230 calories. Many times, these are extra calories we haven’t accounted for, and as a result, they could easily push us over our daily calorie limit and cause us to gain weight.

  • Help students find the right financial track

    Summer is quickly fading. Soon, thousands of Kentucky’s students will return to college campuses. A young person’s college years are some of the most important years for establishing a plan for future financial success. These can also be some of the most financially challenging years, with many students managing their finances for the first time and the rising costs of higher education putting many students and their parents in debt.

  • Harvest Showcase continues as a crowd pleaser

    Just a quick reminder about the Kentucky Forage and Grasslands Council Forage and Beef Cattle Field Day at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at Rivercrest Farm on Mayo Lane — just off U.S. 42 near Goshen and Prospect.  The farm is owned by Caldwell Willig, and you may remember our Regional Cattleman’s Field Day was held there a few years ago.

  • Don’t forget — Harvest Showcase is this Saturday

    Bring the whole family to this event that is free and open to the public at the Henry County Kentucky Fairgrounds! The day will open with a live broadcast on WHAS with Reed Yadon and the Chamber of Commerce breakfast of old ham and fresh farm eggs starting at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until it is gone! A full locally raised breakfast is available for only $8 and includes eggs and country ham, biscuits, gravy and a beverage!

  • Don’t miss the Chamber breakfast, farmers market at Harvest Showcase

    We hope you can make it out to the Henry County Fairgrounds this Saturday for the annual Henry County Harvest Showcase and lunch at the farmers market.  Officially from 9 am to 2 pm, you’ll find nice things to see and do before and after those times. If you arrive very early, you’ll be able to have a great country ham breakfast (local food) at the Chamber of Commerce kitchen (proceeds go to the Chamber for their projects and activities).
