  • Troy and Cheryl Evans of New Castle announce the birth of their daughter, Carly Mae Evans born March 18, 2011 at Baptist Hospital East. She weighed 8 pounds 8.6 ounces and was 19 ¾ inches long.

    She has three siblings: Chase, Cydney and Carson.

    Grandparents are Dennis and Terri Vaughn, New Castle; William Smith and Kelly Mathis, Eminence; and Kenny and Sandy Evans, Port Royal.

  • Kenny and Amy Evans of Holly Ridge, North Carolina announce the birth of their daughter, Evelyn “Evie” Victoria Evans born March 2, 2011 at Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina.

    She weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces and was 19 inches long.

    She has one sibling, Austin.

    Grandparents are Robert and Kathleen Hallstrom, Pittsburgh, PA; and Kenny and Sandy Evans, Port Royal.

  • Aury and Michael McGuire  announce the birth  of their son, Dallas Michael Anthony McGuire born March 15, 2011. He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

    He has two siblings, Erica and Cloie.

    Grandparents are Angie Puckett, Carrollton and the late Michael Puckett; and Michelle McGuire, Carrollton.

    Great-grandparents are Celine Aaron, Texas and the late Roger Aaron; Norma Puckett, Carrollton and the late Charles Puckett and Betty McGuire, Carrollton.

  • Kevin and Tammy Murphy of Crestwood announce the birth of their daughter, Karissa Dawn Murphy, born March 8, 2011, at Norton Suburban Hospital. She weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 inches long.

    She has four siblings: Shawn, Chris, Devon and Katelyn.

    Grandparents are Darlene Winiecki, New Castle and Thelma Murphy, Louisville.

  • The recent grant of $2.5 million to Henry, Shelby and Bullitt Counties has shone a light on the problem of diabetes in our area. These counties have a multi-million dollar grant over the next few years because they have a significantly higher incidence of diabetes. That may seem like a huge amount, until you recognize that the cost of medical care and lost productivity for diabetes in Kentucky is more than $2 billion annually.

  • Sharon Potts is one of six siblings. Five of those siblings have diabetes.
    “I’ve had it for 15 years,” she said. “I hate taking medications and I’ve been insulin dependent for five years.”

    Smithfield’s Judy Bender said coping with the disease is still confusing after two years of dealing with it.

    Dallas Milliner sympathized and singled out Cook’s pharmacist George McDonald for helping him learn about diabetes. “I had a hard time finding information,” he said.

  • Constance and George (Pete) Hayden will celebrate 50 years of marriage on April 29, 2011. They were married in 1961 in Eminence. Constance, the former Connie Henderson, retired from General Electric Company and George retired from Fischers Packing Company.

    The Haydens have three children: Veronica, Alan (Dena) and David, all of Louisville. They also have five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    The couple will celebrate with family and friends and a later vacation is planned to the Holy Land.
