  • Businesses hit and miss during race week

    The inaugural Quaker State 400 brought mixed results for businesses near the Kentucky Speedway, with some left wondering why the expected windfall fell short.

    Tricia Houston, owner of Napoleon Grocery & Deli and Napoleon Ridge Farm in Napoleon about eight miles from Sparta, was among those disappointed in the results.

  • Annual meeting and LHC graduation set for June 28

    The chamber will be having their annual meeting and Leadership Henry County graduation at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, at Scriber’s Station on Elm. 

    A delicious meal of fried chicken with all the trimmings will be served, and the Chamber will hear about the many experiences of the Leadership Class, vote on the new budget, and be introduced to the new board members and president.   All are welcome to come and see what the Chamber is all about.   Tickets are $20 and reservations can be made by calling the office at 845-0806.

  • Henry’s jobless rate down from April 2010

    Unemployment rates fell in 97 Kentucky counties between April 2010 and April 2011, while 20 county rates increased and three counties remained the same, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

    Henry County’s unemployment rate of 10.6 for April 2011, was down from 0.1 percent in April 2010 and down one percent from March 2011’s rate of 11.6 percent.

  • Gearing up for NASCAR

    At least one local merchant has plans to lure some of the crowd from the first NASCAR race at the Kentucky Speedway over to spend a little time and money in Henry County.

    Without hesitation David Neville of Campbellsburg’s Capstone Produce Auction said that snagging a NASCAR race just up the road is the biggest opportunity for growth in Henry County right now.

    The Inaugural Quaker State 400 weekend is expected to draw at least 100,000 race fans to the area between Friday, July 7, and Sunday, July 9.

  • Business presses on at Eminence Cleaners

    “It pleases us to please you” was Floyd Creek’s credo, and the new owner of Eminence Dry Cleaners said he will honor that tradition.

    Robert Eades has used Eminence Dry Cleaners to care for his Sunday best since becoming pastor of the Eminence Pentecostal Church nine years ago. He enjoyed Creek’s company and respected his business ethic.
    “He was kind to me,” Eades said. “He sponsored our Easter drama and we were good business acquaintances.”

  • Signs for the times

    Clark and Melinda Sampson, along with son Jimmy are kept hopping at their burgeoning business in Eminence.

    Affordable Signs & Apparel opened at the corner of Main Street and Eminence Road  in April. Sampson said there is a huge advantage to having a brick and mortar storefront in town.

    For instance, a motorcycle club representative came in at the spur of the moment to purchase t-shirts for a fun-run event. And, when the City of Eminence needed a new Music on Main banner, Sampson could deliver within one business day.

  • Jobless rates down in 108 Ky. counties

    Unemployment rates fell in 108 Kentucky counties, including Henry, between March 2010 and March 2011, while 12 county rates increased, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. 

    Henry County’s unemployment rate of 10.1 for February 2011, was close to the statewide rate, down from 11.1 percent in February 2011 and down from March 2010’s 10.9 percent.

  • Keepers mission: great seafood close to home

    To paraphrase the old adage, give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, give a man a take-out’s phone number and he’ll pick up tasty fish for the whole family on his way home from work.

    Keeper’s Restaurant in the old bank building in Jericho (3350 Lake Jericho Road) opened March 9 with one simple mission in mind. “We’d thought about it for a long time,” said owner Pam Foree, “how great it would be to not have to drive 30-40 miles for good seafood.”

  • McBurney’s having a Hay Day

    For some time, Chris McBurney has taken part in field days throughout the southern United States.

    Now McBurney, who owns and operators McBurney Livestock Equipment in New Castle, wants to share that concept with local farmers. “There’s not a lot of that going on here,” McBurney said. “Most farm shows are several hours away.”

    With that in mind, he and other local distributors came up with the idea for North Central Kentucky Hay Day.

    It will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at the Henry County Fairgrounds.

  • Welcome new members; DQ is business of the month

    It is always a pleasure to welcome new members to the Chamber.
    This week we introduce Wanda Thurman, one of the hardest workers and supporters of New Castle, as an Associate Member and Goodwill Industries who do so much good work with our youth in their Kentuckiana Works program with Paula Ratliff.

    Associate Members are those who wish to support the Chamber in their work for Henry County, but they are not a business, but also include churches, civic organizations and charities.  The dues for Associate Members are $50.
