Generic drugs are often a subject of questions in pharmacy: Are they the same as the brand name drugs? Why do only some drugs have generics? Are they safe? We get these types of questions every day.
A brand-name drug is a patented product. The patent gives the manufacturer exclusive rights to the brand-name drug for a limited amount of time, usually about 20 years after the drug has first been identified.
