  • Carrollton Bus Crash survivor shares story with LaGrange Rotary

    The night of May 13, 1988, 14-year-old Harold Dennis couldn't sleep.

    He was too excited about the next day – when he'd spend the day at Kings Island with friends from Radcliff's First Assembly of God.

    He didn't know at the time that the trip home from the amusement park would change his life forever.

    While on the way back after the day at Kings Island, the bus carrying the 67 passengers – mostly youth – collided with a pickup truck driven by a drunk driver headed the wrong direction on Interstate 71.

  • Accident resulted in safety changes

    Every day, hundreds of thousands of school buses make their way down roads all across the United States at least twice a day – carrying children of all ages to and from school.

    Buses also carry children and adults on day trips, overnight trips and to out-of-town sports and academic events.

    In the past 20 years, there have been numerous improvements to these vehicles that carry such precious cargo, and most of those changes were made because of a tragic crash that happened near Carrollton on Interstate 71 on May 14, 1988.

  • Historical society hosts vintage fashion show

    The Henry County Historical Society held their spring program meeting March 21 at the Eminence Christian Church Christian Church. In honor of Derby time, a fashion show featuring vintage clothing from the Park Place Museum collection of Barbara Ann Callahan. Models were members of the society, male and female, as well as several members of the community. Every one had a delightful time “dressing up” in the actual clothes of such famous people as Jim Beam, Jackie Kennedy, Mrs. Sally Bingham, Sr., Lillian Gish, D.W. Griffith and Kentucky author, Annie Fellows Johnston.

  • A precious loss remembered

    The nightmare of May 14, 1988, remained in Joe Percefull’s head for many years.

    Night after night he dreamed it was one month before his 15th birthday and he was at King’s Island on a church outing with his friends.

    Despite the sunny spring sky and beautiful, blissful day at the park, a cruel, dark storm lurked just over the horizon, carrying with it death. And only he knew.

    In his dream, reoccurring three and four times a week, Percefull told those with him of the horror to come. He begged them not to board.

  • Carrollton Bus Crash - Mahoney trial drew attention of the nation for 17 days

    For 17 days in 1989, the eyes of the nation were focused on the Wheeler Hall of Justice in Carrollton, Ky., as an Owen County man was put on trial for charges related to the May 14, 1988, bus crash that killed 27 people – 24 of them children.

    Larry Mahoney faced dozens counts of manslaughter, assault and wanton endangerment stemming from the crash, in which his pickup truck smashed head-on with the bus on Interstate 71, just inside the Carroll County border.

  • 'Are ya nervous?'

    Like many others, Henry County High School senior Keely Carroll waited quietly in the hallway of Henry County High School last week.

    Waiting to present her senior project to a panel of community members, she was approached by another student. “Are ya nervous?”

    The response was an unequivocal yes.

    Carroll said she was nervous because so much was riding on the presentation. “It (determines) whether we graduate,” she said. The worst part, she said, was not knowing what the panelists would ask.

  • Carrollton Bus Crash resulted in school bus design changes

    Twenty years ago today Carrollton became famous for a tragic set of events that actually had its’ beginning at least twenty years earlier.

    What is known as “the Carrollton bus crash” happened at approximately 10:55 p.m. on that Saturday night as a church bus load of teenagers were returning from a day at Kings Island. Owen County resident, Larry Mahoney, was driving northbound in the southbound lane of I-71 with a blood alcohol level of 0.24.

  • Family answers letter to God

    Cameron Rice considers it a once-in-a-lifetime thing. But really, in how many lifetimes does a letter addressed to God come floating down out of the sky?

    He was riding in his father’s truck when he saw a cluster of balloons floating around the Village Green Kroger shopping center. He thought someone had lost their balloons. His father, Brad, stopped the truck and Cameron, 7, jumped out in the middle of traffic to grab them.

    He saw on the outside it was labeled, “To: God, please help us save our home.”
