  • Smithfield to name park for Morgan

    Mayor Kenny Baker said Smithfield residents, local dignitaries plus friends and family will be on hand to honor Robert W. Morgan’s patronage of the City of Smithfield Park on Saturday, May 30.

    “Over the course of more than 30 years,” he said, “he let the city use the existing park.”

    Smithfield commissioner Saundra Smith said Morgan and his wife, Rose, have since donated the part of the park where the playground stands.

  • Hancock and Waits to remain open

    At least one of Henry County’s two auto dealers learned last week that they were safe from closure.

    Hancock and Waits Chrysler dealership employees were on pins and needles awaiting notification from ailing auto giant Chrysler about whether or not they would be a casualty of industry-wide shutdowns.

  • Relay For Life events

    Relay For Life in Henry County is quickly approaching, scheduled for Friday, June 26, at the Henry County High School Track.  Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

  • Eastern, HCMS going to national meet

    Students from two Henry County schools will face off against each other — and the rest of the state — for a chance to represent Kentucky at the We The People...Project Citizen national competition later this year.

    Last Thursday, the 18-member Student Government Club from HCMS competed with two Eastern Elementary School fifth grade teams at Eastern.

    “I think we have a great shot at winning the competition,” Jordan Lewellen, an HCMS eighth grader said.

  • On the trail again

    It was a blend of old ways and new, patience versus impatience.

    As a wagon train of eight to ten mostly homemade wagons trundled south on U.S. 421 toward Turners Station Road, two vehicles swung out on a blind curve to pass the slower moving wagons, mules and horses.

    It didn’t seem to phase the wagon riders, however, who kept on at their steady pace.

    Earlier, the group gathered in the parking lot of the Campbellsburg Consignment Shop for a not-so-quick lunch of pizza and tall tales.

  • ‘We do it for the children’

    Fire departments in Henry County are gearing up for another year of collecting money for the WHAS Crusade for Children.

    Campbellsburg Fire Chief David Noe said despite the major setback of a fire at the Campbellsburg firehouse recently, the department will conduct its charitable effort as usual. “We’re not going to miss a beat this year,” he said. “We’ll just have to work a little harder.”

  • Henry County Public Schools to hold Young Composers Concert

    HCPS will hold a Young Compsers concert, sponsored by the Henry County Youth Service Center and the Henry County Band Boosters in partnership with the University of Louisville School of Music

     

    The concert will be held Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m., in the Henry County Middle School commons area and will featuring the music of Henry County Middle School and High School Student Composers.

  • Park may open in June

    General Manager

    Almost a year after talk about refurbishing the Eminence City swimming pool culminated in a meeting that ultimately terminated the project, a new park is about to open in the pool’s place.

    Monday night, Eminence City Council member Drane Stephens said functional bathrooms and clearing up any safety issues are the last barriers to the park’s opening.

    “My goal was June 1, I don’t know if we can make it or not, but that was my goal,” he told the rest of the council.
