    Elderly man caught for cocaine trafficking

    State police arrested an elderly man on drug charges about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, after witnesses said he was waving a weapon in the parking lot of the Pendleton Pilot Travel Center.

    Leroy Gamble, 71, of Smithfield, was charged with trafficking a controlled substance, after investigators said they found several ounces of cocaine, other drug paraphernalia and $4,043 in cash on him.

    Troopers were tipped off by a witness at the station, who allegedly saw Gamble waving what was believed to be a gun.

  • County hit by severe thunderstorms one week, snow the next

    Snow and ice late Monday night created conditions treacherous enough to cancel school throughout the region.

    In Henry County, the snowfall began shortly after 5 p.m. and continued through the night. In the early morning hours, sleet and freezing rain began falling, creating what would become a slippery mess.

    Eminence Superintendent Donald Aldridge made the call just after 5 a.m. Tuesday morning to cancel school in the small district.

  • Grant gives jump start to Head Start

    Eminence Head Start operators recently said more than $4,200 in grants recently were used to upgrade the program's facilities. Nancy Shinault, child development specialist for the Early Head Start/Full-Day Full-Year Head Start program said the money was used to purchase materials and other furnishings, which will enhance the classroom environment for the program's 40 students. It will also help provide additional learning experiences for the children, she said.

    • By 1:45 Wednesday afternoon, Ky-145 and Ky-157 were again open.

    • A portion of the roof of historic Drennon Church was peeled back by wind, resulting in damage to the second floor of the church.

  • HCMS academic team preps for regional meet

    Twelve top-qualifying Henry County Middle School students will advance to the Governor's Cup Regional academic competition this month, after earning high marks earlier in various areas.

    The team finished 7-3 this year, taking second place overall in January's district competition. They'll have the home court advantage when they face 13 other teams, Feb. 16 and 18 at HCMS, for the regional title.

    "This has been a rebuilding year for us," co-coach Kathy Gregory said. "We're facing really strong northern Kentucky teams."

  • Blight ordinance passes in New Castle

    Shabby-property owners will face harsher tax penalties under New Castle's new blight ordinance.

    City commissioners Tuesday unanimously passed an ordinance assessing a $10 per $100 assessed ad valorem tax for those who fail to adequately maintain their property. That could mean a $5,000 purse pinch for offenders who own a $50,000 property.

    The ordinance loosely coincides with citywide efforts to spruce up the tiny town and spawn renewed interest around its historic Main Street.

  • Campbellsburg approves five sewer pro

    After a 6-0 vote by the Campbellsburg City Council on Jan. 22 to approve plans that would initiate five sewer system projects, businessman Bruce Duncan had just one question.

    "Does this mean we're going to do it?" he asked.

    "It" is a utilities bore underneath Interstate-71 that some believe could be the foundation for future development around the Campbellsburg exit.

  • Jan. 31 fire destroys the home of a family of 12

    Fire ravaged the home a Campbellsburg family early Thursday morning and sent two volunteer firefighters to the hospital.

    Emergency responders received the call of a house fire at 288 Fewell Road, around 3:53 a.m. Thursday, Post 5 dispatchers said. Neighbors awoke to what they described as "shotgun" like explosions.

    Three volunteer fire crews from Campbellsburg, New Castle and Bedford battled the blaze for at least an hour before they were able to control it, according to reports from emergency officials.

    Principal Graham Wied Wednesday said students and staff are dodging construction for the most part, but the final product will be worth it.

    The 90-year-old Eminence native not only lived through the nation's Civil Rights movement, he helped define the battle for equality that still continues today.

    Most days, you can find him delivering meals to the county's elderly homebound residents. The short man shuffles from door-to-door, his jeans deliberately triple-rolled to just above his shoes.
