  • EHS to honor fourth class of Hall of Fame this weekend

    The fourth class of the Eminence High School Hall of Fame will be honored this weekend, which includes two current EHS football coaches, two former superintendents, a librarian, a school board member, a golfer, and a former teacher and coach. The inductees will officially join the first three classes with a dinner this Saturday night inside the high school’s cafeteria at 7 o’clock. Also, they will be recognized during halftime of Eminence’s football game against Evangel Christian the night before.

  • EHS set to play Anderson in post-season this Monday

    Eminence’s volleyball team closed out its regular season Monday night and will open post-season play a week later against Anderson County at 6 p.m.

    The 28th District tournament will be held at Anderson, who is also the No. 1 seed in the tourney at 17-10 overall and 5-1 against district opponents. Eminence is the No. 4 seed with a 1-16 overall record and 0-6 in the district. The winner of that game will advance to the district finals against either No. 2 Shelby County or No. 3 Henry County.

  • Return of the paper ballot

    When Henry Countians cast their ballot in November, the results will be tabulated — and reported — much faster than in previous years.

    Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson was in New Castle last week to demonstrate the new paper ballot voting machine Henry County voters will use for the first time this fall.

    “We expect the numbers to come in quicker,” he said. “Kentucky can be one of the first to tell its story to the country.”

    At about 9:30 Saturday morning, roughly half a dozen Safety Kleen employees stood at the plant’s main gate on La Grange Road, waiting somewhat impatiently. “Where are they? What’s taking so long?” some asked.

    “They” were a group of emergency responders trying to work their way from the New Castle Fire Station to the scene of a possible disaster — explosion of Safety Kleen’s industrial drum shredder.

  • Seven vie for four seats on N.C. commission

    When New Castle residents cast their votes Nov. 4, the result could be an entirely new commission — just one incumbent seeks reelection this year.

    Candidates for New Castle City Commission are Dennis W. Benham, Donna Gatewood, Linda Golden, Anthony Pierce, Tommy Lane Pollard, Charlie Sevier and incumbent Wanda Thurman.

  • Ladycats 'on the upward curve of progression' on soccer field

    The Henry County girls’ soccer team dropped two more games last week — 6-2 against Western Hills on Wednesday and 3-1 against Fern Creek on Thursday — but they are still “on the upward curve of progression,” head coach Shannon Snider said of his Ladycats who brought a 3-1-7 record into this week.

    “I’m still happy with how things are going,” he said. “It’s all about building for the future at this point.”

  • It's a K.O. for the Cats

    In a contest labled “The Game,” it just wasn’t much of a game this year. In fact, it was a K.O. off a strong, right haymaker in the opening round — if this was a boxing match that is. Eminence was bounced off the ropes, knocked down early and couldn’t get back up as Henry County came away with an unpredictable 55-6 victory.

  • 'Yes we can!'

    Editor's note: This is the second in a series about CATS scores for all local schools. The schools will be presented in alphabetical order. Next week, we will look at Eminence Elementary School.

    Standing before a gymnasium packed with students, teachers and parents, Eastern Elementary School Principal Sharon Bright presented her school's testing goals.

    Bright said the school hopes to have at least three content areas with scores of 100 or greater, and an academic index of 100.

    "Are we committed to getting 100 this year?" she asked the group?
