  • New church rumbles into county

    After 17 years as pastor of Ridgeview Baptist Church in Spencer County, Finchville resident Vern Hawkins felt pulled in a new direction. “I felt like the Lord was leading me to do something different,” he said.

    Hawkins began the non-denominational New Hope Biker Church in January 2008. He said it was decided to remain non-denominational so that people not wishing to be identified with a particular denomination would feel comfortable attending.

  • Youth basketball program gets board approval

    It’s unlikely that Eminence High School Varsity Basketball Coach Chris Nethery and Mark Blackburn expected the deluge of questions and concerns that rained down on them at the Eminence Independent School Board meeting August 19.

    Nethery and Blackburn presented a request for rental of the school gym for Eminence Youth Boy’s Basketball games. They have formed a team of fifth and sixth grade boys to play inter-squad games with neighboring city and county teams.

  • County to modify mandatory garbage

    If the bags of trash collected each week along county roads are any indication, mandatory garbage collection might be working.

    Henry County Solid Waste Enforcement Officer Donnie Tipton told the fiscal court last week that to date, inmates have picked up 724 bags of trash, and a total of approximately 12 tons of garbage, along 113 miles of county roads so far this year. By the same time last year, Tipton said, inmates picked up 1,500 bags of trash.

  • Thanks for city wide yard sale

    “Thanks” to the Eminence City Council for giving its approval for a city-wide yard and garage sale that was held in our community on August 9. This was the first time Eminence had held an event of this nature. In conjunction with the National Garage/Yard Sale Day, things worked well. The NGYSD, is a time when communities work together to reduce, reuse and recycle merchandise that would otherwise be thrown away.

  • Eminence pool is full ... of dirt & rock

    Less than a day after the Eminence City Council approved spending $5,000 to fill in the city’s pool, the dump trucks were rolling.

    Thursday morning, county dump trucks carted approximately 300 tons of dirt from the county garage to the pool to begin the process that effectively ends any hopes of reopening the much debated pool.

    In a called meeting on Aug. 20, the city council voted 5-1 to approve filling in the pool. The vote came with little fanfare or discussion, which didn’t seem to surprise Mayor Jim Petitt.

  • Cities deal with vacant property ordinances

    Houses left empty, abandoned to weather and weeds sit next to well-kept homes with neatly trimmed hedges. Neighbors and city leaders alike have become frustrated by owners who ignore the upkeep of homes and properties because they are vacant.

    The Henry County cities of New Castle, Eminence and Campbellsburg have decided to fight back.

    In February 2008, the City of New Castle adopted its abandoned urban property ordinance which allows the city to raise tax rates on blighted or deteriorated properties.

    Henry County residents have long enjoyed the home-style cooking and fresh baked pies served at Mom’s Restaurant in New Castle.

    Now owner Nancy Tipton has opened a second Mom’s in Pendleton.

    Located at the corner of Kentucky 146 and 153, diners can expect the same great food they’ve loved at the original. “We offer home-cooked plate lunches, dinner specials and homemade pies,” Tipton said.
