  • Weather making for a better 2008 ag season

    Crops, in general, seem to be in good order for the 2008 season, according to Steve Moore, county agriculture extension agent. However, a rainy May left its impact on crops.

    “Compared to 2007, people are breathing a sigh of relief,” Moore said. “Hay quality issues will probably become a little bit more prevalent as we enter the feeding season though.”

  • Some things in life are still free

    In the current tight economic climate, I think it’s important to know that a few things in life are still free. Mostly.

    A walk through the neighborhood is a great way to enjoy some free entertainment, get a little sunshine and exercise not just yourself, but any dogs you might have. Sitting out in the backyard looking up at the stars? Free, as long as you don’t count what you might spend on insect repellent or anti-itch cream for the bug bites you might endure.

    Following in the footsteps of the girls’ soccer team, the boys will field a varsity team this fall as well. The girls started a junior varsity squad last fall and will follow with varsity this upcoming school year, while the boys will forgo a JV season and dive headfirst into varsity action Aug. 21 with their first scheduled game at Waggener High School.

  • Roller Derby

    Mix hockey, old-school rollerskates, speed skating, grappling, acrobatics and football — throw in a little wrestling, too — and you have one of the fastest growing sports for women in the country known as Roller Derby.

    The hits are big and the crashes are jaw dropping, and in between there is some athletic skating as players navigate through all the chaos while bodies continue to hit the deck to the cheers of the crowd.

  • EHS will award varsity letters to academic teams

    During the upcoming school year, Eminence High School will hand out the varsity letter E to more than its athletes, EHS Principal Steve Frommeyer said. Now, students who participate in academic competitions will receive the varsity letter as well.

  • Biking Henry

    When Greg Woods asked me to go on a 50- to 60-mile bike ride with him and Ricky Drawbaugh last week, I paused and thought about it for a few seconds. I really liked biking, I thought, but I hadn’t been on a ride since April. After taking some time away from biking, I was getting used to not having such a sore butt. Plus, I had to work Friday — the day they decided to go touring the county and for some reason wanted my company.

  • I-71 accident victims were from Nashville

    Four Nashville, Tenn., families are in mourning this week after learning their loved ones were the victims in a fiery crash on Interstate 71 on July 27.

    Henry County Coroner Jimmy Pollard said last week that Jackson Scott Harris, 19, Caitlin R. Currey, 18, Caitlin Christine Lee, 20, and Ryan Keith Williams, 19, all of Nashville, were killed in the accident that resulted in I-71’s closure.

  • Back to School - HCMS Jump Start and schedule pick up

    The Henry County Middle School will hold their “Jump Start” program for all incoming sixth grade students on Thursday, July 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This orientation program includes a walk-through of their class schedule, a supply list, practice opening locker, lunch and much more. Each sixth grade child is strongly encouraged to attend and parents are welcome. Please bring with you your child’s updated immunization certificate and 6th grade physical exam form and turn them into the office.
