    Summer has always had a special place in my heart for a number of reasons.

    Primarily, I yearn for summer because the thought of sleeping in until my eyes open sounds like bliss every time I hear my alarm clock screech the other months of the year.

    My internship with the Henry County Local was not only a job, but it was a learning experience that a classroom setting simply can not offer.

  • Frankfort Perspective

    It has been nearly 60 years since Kentucky undertook its first comprehensive assessment of what is easily the Commonwealth’s most abundant natural resource: Our forests.

    Since then, four other surveys have taken place, with the most recent completed in 2004. Last spring, state and federal forestry officials publicly unveiled what they found.

  • Relay follow up will be at fairgrounds this weekend

    The 2008 American Cancer Society Relay for Life, cut short on June 27 due to threatening weather, will regroup on Saturday, July 19 from 6-9 p.m. at the Henry County Fairgrounds.

    The abbreviated event raised approximately $80,000 according to Team Recruitment Chair, Diana Berry. The original goal was $120,000.

    The centerpiece of the rescheduled event will be the ceremonial lighting of handheld luminaria candles and reading of names of those who have passed on.

  • Elston case sent to grand jury

    Henry County District Court Judge Diane Wheeler ruled Monday that there is enough probable cause to proceed with a murder case involving a New Castle man.

    Robert Steven Elston, 54, is charged with second-degree murder in the July 6 shooting death of Joseph Burch, 31, at the New Castle apartment complex where Elston resides. Burch died of a single gunshot wound to the chest that entered his left lung and exited through his ribcage in the back.

  • Resident questions council about money jars

    During the regular meeting of the Eminence City Council Monday night, resident Marcia Clark asked just what had become of pool donations made in jars at area businesses.

    “What happened to the jars?” she asked. “How much money was collected?”

    Eminence Police Chief Carey Duncan reported that — at Mayor Jim Pettit’s request — he questioned Doug Gingrich about the jars.

  • Camp teaches youth about horses

    Surrounded by horses since they were young, sisters Sarah Lyons and Stephanie Mahoney have made horses their livelihood.

    “Both my sister and I have equine degrees from Midway College,” Lyons said. “We’ve had Morgans and shown Morgans my whole life. We kind of built up into a little business, Royal Acres Morgans.”

    Crazy hours and the opportunity to have fun at work on a daily basis are just two of the perks in the life of a DJ.

    Both Brett Waford and Jonathan Mertz were born and raised in Henry County and are both currently employed with Forever Communications in Frankfort.

    “The whole point of radio is to have fun,” said Waford, who is better known as “Jumpin’ Jim Beam” to Froggy radio (104.9) listeners in Frankfort and surrounding areas.

  • Blackburn leaving Eminence

    After seven seasons as the head man for the Eminence High School boys’ basketball team, filled with some of the best basketball squads the school has produced in recent memory, Keith Blackburn has decided to step down as Eminence’s coach. His decision to back away from the program stemmed from off-court issues that date back the previous three seasons, he said.

  • Zak Yates named 8th Region Assistant Coach of the Year

    Through nine seasons, five head coaches and numerous wins and losses, Zak Yates has been the one common denominator on the Henry County High School baseball team for almost a decade. Now, after the best season Henry County has produced during Yates’ tenure, his tireless work is not going unnoticed. Following Henry’s remarkable baseball season, which ended in the championship game of the 8th Region tournament two months ago, Yates was named the 8th Region Assistant Baseball Coach of the Year.
