  • Henry Countians get a jump start to fastpitch

    The Henry County Purple Thunder, playing in the Shelby County Parks and Recreation Girls 6-8 Fastpitch League, celebrated enough feel-good moments this past season to keep them smiling for days. They were a perfect 13-0, won the regular-season championship, claimed the tournament title, crossed home plate 239 times, held opponents to just 37 runs and, hopefully, jump started a softball career that might one day land them a spot on the high schools roster.

  • Barn quilts finding their way into Henry County

    Situated on a bend in the road along Cedarmore Road near Pleasureville, the geometric red, white and blue vanes of a windmill-patterned quilt square dominate Patsy Brewer’s gray barn.

    Brewer, a 50-year Henry County resident, says she first saw pictures of the roadside art form in a country-themed magazine. The photos reminded her of her beloved grandmother, Nora Chisholm, an avid quilter who recently passed away.

  • For the first pick, the Bulls select...

    After I drafted high school football players in Henry County for the 2008 NFL draft and wrote about it, I received lots of comments all positive about the column. Of course, it was just for fun, and Im sure not everyone agreed with my picks.

    Now, thanks to some people in the community that liked the idea and thought I should do it for basketball as well, Im at it again.

  • Bacon and eggs with a side of friendship

    Every morning at 6 a.m., several men migrate to the same table at Chat ‘n’ Nibble restaurant in Eminence to settle all the world’s problems, according to Frank Marlow, a retiree of Ford Motor Company and former owner of Five-Star in Eminence.

    “We’ve got Bush right where we want him,” Jim Bennett, a retiree of Kentucky Utilities, said.

    A mixture of retired, not-so-retired and working men make up the regular morning crowds at the Chat ‘n’ Nibble.

  • Jim McKee umpiring Olympic trials

    While the top athletes in the country are vying for elusive spots on the USA team this week in Eugene, Ore., Jim McKee of Henry County will be alongside the top tier athletes as an umpire. This makes McKees second umpiring stint at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials he also worked at the 2004 trials in Sacramento, Calif.

  • For pageant director, it's about teaching confidence

    Year after year, Brenda McGlothin, Henry County Fair Pageant Director, returns to the Henry County fair pageant circuit for another season of helping girls become the leaders of tomorrow.

    “The biggest thing is just giving the girls confidence in themselves and being able to be in front of people,” McGlothin said. “A lot of children might do a pageant just for the fun of it and it might give them confidence that they didn’t have before.”

    McGlothin has been involved with pageants for about the last 20 years.

  • Campbellsburg White Sox claim HCYBL title

    The Campbellsburg White Sox picked a good time to peak as they swept through the Henry County Youth Baseball Leagues 8-10 division with a perfect 4-0 record in the double-elimination tournament, ending with a 17-7 win over the Pleasureville Bulldogs last Monday night at Pleasureville's field.

  • Traffic stop turned chase results in deadly

    An attempted traffic stop turned deadly early Thursday morning after an Eminence man led a Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy on a brief chase that ended with an accident on Kentucky 146.

    Steven Jeffries, 50, of Eminence was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Henry County Coronor Jimmy Pollard.
