  • Forestry Field Day focuses on hardwoods

    Sherman and Joyce Dotson’s five-year-old black walnut plantation provided the backdrop for the recent Henry County Extension Office Forestry Field Day.

    The field day highlighted methods of farming and the future of marketing locally grown hardwoods.

    Experts in forestry, woodcutting and wildlife habitat as well as individuals considering a tree plantation shared information and experiences while enjoying a walking tour of the plantation and surrounding forest land.

  • I'll be adventuring abroad in China

    “I’m going to China.” I love the responses that simple sentence elicits whenever someone asks me what I’m doing this summer. The most common response is the raised eyebrow look of surprise followed by the crooked smile and sidelong glance which seems to say, “Come on. Quit pulling my leg!” The next most common response is the, “oh, I guess you are into the Olympics huh?” Finally there is a more recent response that I hadn’t heard before: “missionary work, huh?”

  • Community, paper should be proud of baseball team

    I’m writing this letter to the editor in hopes that many of your readers will see this and better appreciate the accomplishments of this year’s Henry County High School baseball team. As a parent and a fan I was anticipating a wonderful, positive and encouraging headline and a picture of “our” team in “our” Henry County Local after playing in the Regional baseball finals.

  • Eminence hosts annual Spring Sports Banquet

    After a season full of ups and downs, Eminence High School hosted its annual Spring Sports Banquet at the Eminence Community Life Center last Monday night. Among those honored were the baseball, softball and track teams.

    The head coaches gave out seven awards each — academic, leadership and community, along with four coach-chosen awards — and also announced lettermen winners, recognized each player and gave their appreciation to the seniors who recently ended their high school athletic careers.

  • Roberts, Wilson named All-8th Region

    When Kentucky’s all-region baseball teams were announced last Wednesday morning in the Courier-Journal, two Henry County High School players were named among those in the 8th Region. Ben Roberts, a senior, and Tommy Wilson, a junior, were both named to the squad, which included the top 22 players in the 16-team region.

    When Austin Hunsaker took over Henry County’s head coaching position during the middle of conditioning this past winter, his main objective was to “create a team atmosphere” between the coaches on the sideline and players on the field. In the end, after a roller-coaster ride that saw the Wildcats celebrate one of their best seasons in recent memory — Hunsaker achieved his top objective, and more.

  • Another year, and no Triple Crown

    On a day that I anticipated history being made with horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner in three decades, I was glued to the television Saturday with the anticipation of Big Brown dusting the field in route to an easy, unchallenged victory.

    I envisioned my hands raised in the air as Brown galloped into the winner’s circle.

  • Gettin' buggy with it

    Corey Kirschman knows there are many things fighting for the attention of her two children.

    There are video games, movies, television shows and more. Kirschman, however, hopes they catch the reading bug.

    “There are so many things besides reading that will take their attention and their mind,” she said. With the help of the Henry County Public Library’s summer reading program, she hopes to keep her eldest, 12, engaged with books. The family has faithfully attended the program for nine years.

  • Slipping, sliding away no longer

    What some Henry County magistrates feared could be a disaster in the making has been repaired, and residents traveling Union Church Road can breathe a little easier.

    During its April meeting, members of the Henry County Fiscal Court felt it imperative that something be done about the slipping roadway.

    According to Henry County Judge-Executive John Logan Brent, the road began sliding several years ago. Though the road was repaired at that time, the road began sliding again earlier this year.
