  • Look everyday for thankfulness

    By Jon Park

Tuesday was the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

During the first few days of July 1863, Union and Confederate soldiers converged on Gettysburg, Pa., and fought a horrific, bloody battle that saw more than 50,000 deaths in just three days. That is almost as many deaths as in the entire Vietnam War. The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War. This war tore the nation and its families apart.

  • Time certainly goes by quickly near our holidays

Thanksgiving is almost here, and very shortly, Santa will be coming down the chimney. We hope your busy days will allow time to shop our local businesses and make their cash registers ring. Nov. 30 is called Small Saturday as opposed to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Henry County is blessed with really interesting small businesses where you can find gifts of all types. Finders Keepers, Somewhere in Tyme and The Shop on Main in Eminence can be a great help if you are looking for a special gift.

  • Our country will mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy assassination

On Friday, our country will mark the 50th anniversary of one of its most tragic events: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Like the attack on Pearl Harbor before it and 9/11 after it, Nov. 22, 1963, is one of a handful of dates in history where those old enough to remember it will never forget where they were and what they were doing.

  • Mainstream media’s agenda party

    By 'Average' Joe Yates

Our small community is losing the publisher of its weekly paper and I, for one, think it’s a big loss. That, and because a recent column in which I blamed local TV news for taking the kids from our streets is fresh in my mind, has caused me to reflect on the state of today’s media.

  • Peyton's State Runner-up Finish Tops List

    1. It was easy to pick the top highlight of the season this year. MacKenzie Peyton’s runner-up performance at the state golf tournament was stellar but so was her whole season.

The all-state golf selection system is one of the least subjective in high school sports, and because of that, a young athlete can be rewarded for their efforts even if they don’t come from a big-name program.

  • Chemistry is Key for EHS Volleyball

Last year I wrote in this column that something special was brewing at Eminence High School.

I think the young ladies on the Eminence Warriors volleyball team proved me right this year. They had a phenomenal season capped by a postseason run to the semifinals of the regional tournament.
