  • Letter to a litterer

    On a beautiful spring morning as I was traveling down Bullitt Hill Road on my way to work, I was enjoying the bright green of the new landscape. Then, something caught my eye on the side of the road. Not wild flowers nor dogwood blossoms nor redbud sprigs, but a fresh, garish orange and white McDonalds bag! A few rolls of the wheels on the opposite side was a red Miller carton (empty for certain). Bright colors, but ugly trash!

  • 21 years after her death, Judy Lea still helping children in Henry County

    This year will mark the 21st anniversary of the death of a beloved Henry County resident, Judy Wilson Lea. Even though many people did not know her, many still benefit from her. Lea worked for the Henry County Public School system as a cafeteria worker at Campbellsburg Elementary School. While there she became known for her willingness to help children in need. In 1987, the year she died, a fund was set up in her name that helps children every year who cannot afford the basic needs in life, such as shoes, clothing, eyeglasses and medical care.

  • City council should rethink opening pool

    It's time for the Eminence City Council to remove the rose-colored glasses and take a hard look at the feasibility of re-opening the city's pool.

    Officials initially believed the pool repairs could run the city as little as $12,000. That belief was hopelessly naive.

    As the pool committee and council looked a little deeper at cost estimates for the pool's repair, the price tag rose from $15,000-$30,000 to more than $150,000.

  • Ladycats earn first win in dominating fashion

    Henry County's first home game of the season started with question marks and ended with a lopsided finish.

    The Ladycats, coming off a 24-17 record last spring and losing their first two games this season, wasted no time in putting away Carroll County last Monday night, and stretched their advantage to 14-0 by the time the teams shook hands after the game. The win left the Cats at 1-2 overall, 1-0 in district play, and in the driver's seat for their third straight 31st District title.

  • It's youth versus experience in Lady Warriors opener

    In Eminence's first softball game of this season, Shelby County had a slugfest while the Lady Warriors struggled on both sides of the ball, resulting in a 16-0 win for Shelby after just three innings of play.

    It was the fourth game of the season for the Lady Rockets, who defeated Spencer County (15-0) and Butler (5-0), and lost to Scott County (5-3). Meanwhile, the weather kept the Lady Warriors off the field until they met the tough Shelby squad last Tuesday night in Shelbyville.

  • Cats host All-Comers track meet

    Led by three first-place finishes from senior Larry Farmer, along with a pair of first from both Jamie Graham and Brittany Crawford, the Henry County track team hosted the Henry County All-Comers last Tuesday afternoon.

    Farmer won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes and 15 seconds, the 1,600-meter run in 5:15 and completed a rare trifecta with triple jump win of 35 feet and 1.5 inches. Meanwhile, Graham won the high jump (4-06) and the triple jump (25-00), while Crawford won both the 100-meter hurdles (16.6) and the 300-meter hurdles (57.3).

  • Wildcats progressing, but still waiting on key hits

    Still waiting on one big hit to get everyone's confidence up to par, the Henry County baseball team took its first defeat of the season at Spencer County last Wednesday night, 3-2.

    The loss goes along with Henry's wins over Trimble County (5-1) and Model High School (5-0) the week before, which gives the Wildcats a 2-1 start to the unpredictable season.

  • Hoopla comes to an end with Curtis Blevins on top of list

    Boy, I'm glad that's over.

    If you see me sprinting from light pole to light pole through town, don't worry, I'm just trying to avoid being seen after this year's Henry Hoopla contest. It's become an annual tradition for me though - filling out my bracket with high hopes, letting everyone in the community know who's going to win, then slowly backpedaling down the list until I hit close to rock bottom. Usually by this time, shortly after the final weekend of games, I'm a bit embarrassed to leave the office.

  • First time on track, no problem

    Not only did the Eminence track team participate in its first track meet of the season last Tuesday night at the Henry County All-Comers, it was the first time the Warriors had been on a track in more than 10 months.
