    Studies show that when fathers actively contribute to the upbringing of their children in a positive and supportive way, the children do better in school, are more confident and have healthier self-esteems. Children and teens who feel secure and comfortable about themselves are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol or engage in sexual activity before marriage. This affirming encouragement has long lasting effects well into adulthood as children learn to make good decisions for a brighter future.

  • Case examines 2nd amendment rights

    On March 18, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments for District of Columbia v. Heller, a case which questions whether the District of Columbia's gun ban violates the Second Amendment. This is the first Second Amendment case taken up by the Supreme Court since 1939. As you may know, the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment have been severely limited in the nation's capital for the last thirty-two years.

  • Warriors allow 34 runs in opening two games; score five

    As the stat book shows, it was a tough week for Mark Payton in his first two games as the Eminence baseball team's new head coach.

    The Warriors, who are trying to turn the tables after a combined 5-36 record the previous two seasons, opened the 2008 campaign with a blowout 20-0 loss to Shelby County last Monday, then followed with a 14-5 loss to Spencer County the following night. The rocky start leaves Eminence at 0-2 with Henry County (Thursday), Anderson County (Monday) and Butler County (Tuesday) just over the horizon.

  • Making History

    No team equals no problem for Michael Gregory - it's an equation the Henry County student is all too familiar with.

    Gregory never got the chance to officially play high school soccer during his four years at Henry County High School, which didn't have a team, but will take his soccer skills to the next level at the University of the Cumberlands. When he suits up for the Patriots next fall, he will become the first student from HCHS to play soccer at a college or university.

  • Ladycats' bat still needs improvements, coach Kasten says

    The Henry County softball team opened its 2008 campaign Saturday with a double header at Oldham County High School, where the Ladycats lost to both South Oldham (3-2) and Oldham County (9-1) to start the season at 0-2.

    Coming off an impressive 24-17 season, Henry lost six key players to graduation, including batters No. 2 through No. 6 in the rotation. And it showed at the plate on opening day as the Ladycats had around 13 strikeouts in each of the two games. Offense is an area the Cats still need a lot of work, coach Jon Kasten said.

  • Wildcats perfect in opening week play

    The rainy weather shrunk Henry County's opening week of five baseball games to just two, but it did little to dampen the Wildcats' spirit as they rolled past Trimble County (5-1) and Model (5-0) to start the season perfect at 2-0.

    In Austin Hunsaker's first two games as the head coach since the departure of Mike Thibodeaux, the Cats defeated Trimble last Tuesday, then followed with a shutout win over Model the following night. Pitching, near-perfect defense and just enough offense allowed the Wildcats to start the season just the way they wanted.

  • Despite cold temperatures and strong winds, Cats open season with solid performances

    With temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and wind gusts throughout the day, the weather wasn't very cooperative Saturday during the Western Hills Invitational in Frankfort. But that didn't stop the Henry County track team from producing some solid early-season marks.

    Jamie Graham brought back to New Castle the team's only first-place finish with her 4-foot-6 clearance in the high jump, which tied her for first overall with Jasmine Taylor of Ballard. Both girls leaped over 4-6, but knocked the bar off at 4-8 three times each to leave the duo tied.

  • Still looking for all the madness this March

    Usually by this time - when the teams in the NCAA men's basketball tournament are narrowed down to the Final Four - my eyes are wide open and my jaw is dragging the floor. Usually, it's just plain madness.

    But this March, uncharacteristically, I'm still waiting for that madness to begin.

  • Residents air pool concerns

    Call it the meeting that wasn't.

    The Eminence City Council meeting Monday night was canceled for lack of a quorum. At least four of six members must be present; only three showed.

    But that didn't stop Eminence Mayor Jim Petitt from announcing that at the council's next meeting, to be held April 14, he will dissolve the city's swimming pool commission.

  • Like 2007, the HCHS track team has hopes for another record-breaking year in '08

    Following the accomplishments of the 2007 Henry County track team won't be an easy task for the Cats this season, but one they're definitely up for as the outdoor season rolls around.

    Last spring, Henry sent a school-record 10 athletes to the Kentucky State Track & Field Championships, and with six of those athletes returning for another go around and a few new faces on the roster, the Cats look to do even better this spring.
