  • Thanks for hard work after storms

    Our farm received considerable damage in the February 5 storms. Our electric service and telephone service, like several others in the area, was out for two days. KU was swamped with repair calls but did an amazing job in restoring service, working past midnight. The dedication of their employees, working long hours in difficult conditions, needs to be recognized.

  • SULPHUR SCHOOL SCORCHED

    Arson hasnt been ruled out in a Sunday night blaze that destroyed the former Sulphur High School on Ky. 157.

    Smoke and flames billowed from the abandoned hilltop structure and could be seen for miles away, according to reports from fire officials and witnesses. Only the building's brick facade remains. At least 20 firefighters from four fire departments responded to the fire that took nearly three hours to squelch.

  • Girls Scouts thank Judge-Executive John Logan Brent

    The Girl Scouts of Henry County would like to thank Judge-Executive John Logan Brent for his help during our Girl Scout cookie delivery. The use of the 4-H building for distribution and his help when we ran into a gigantic snag during delivery is greatly appreciated. The Girl Scouts are now ready for your yearly cookie sales and a little ice storm couldn't keep us down! Thank you Judge Brent!

  • Community Calendar for March 5, 2008

    Wednesday, March 5

    Girls in Action (GAs) of Cropper Baptist Church meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. The program is open to girls through age 12.

    Karate classes will be held at the Community Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

    Childrens Story and Craft hour every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pleasureville Christian Church. Community Library open to the public from 1 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

    Henry County Middle School Site-Based District Meeting will be held at 4 p.m. in the HCMS conference room.

  • Keep making waves to open the pool

    I really appreciate all that the Making Waves committee has done to help open the pool. Even if the pool is unable to open this summer, it just needs to get open sometime in the next couple of years to give the kids something cool and fun to do in the summer. That's why I have some ideas of how to get the pool open and keep the pool open and going.

  • Survey finds believers likely to swap faiths

    What nearly started in a barn is now a way of life for Leon Tracy.

    Tracy, 66, is pastor and co-founder of Kentucky Cowboy Church, a non-conventional, non-denominational church near Pleasureville, where its not unusual to see denim-clad parishioners in Wranglers and Western hats. The "cowboys for Christ" were forced to gather at a Gest Road worship site, after insurance agents cited liabilities with holding services in a barn.

    "A lot of folks are horse people, they like to ride," Tracy said. "We're very relaxed."

  • Anderson 'has its way' with younger Warriors

    The Eminence Warriors basketball season came to a screeching halt last Tuesday night in the 30th District tournament, losing to powerhouse Anderson County in opening-round action inside Spencer County High School's gym, 77-28.

    For the Warriors, who won just two games during the regular season, it wasnt much of a contest as they struggled against the Bearcats from the get go and lost by 49 points.

  • Owen County proves too much for Ladycats

    The Henry County Ladycats bowed out of the 31st District tournament in the opening round last Tuesday night, but they got crucial experience with all of their players coming back minus senior Jean-Anne Moore. Owen County, who hosted the tournament, jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and pulled away to a convincing 56-36 win.

  • Saying goodbye to seniors

    If not for two major injuries, things might have been a tad different for Joey Pollard. After all, Henry County's off-and-on starting guard during the previous four seasons had his first ACL tear as a sophomore and another tear as a junior.

    With injuries like those, you cant question the fact that Pollard could have had a more successful high school career. The questions come into play when thinking about how much more successful it would have been.

  • EHS archery heading back to state

    Placing third at the Region 3 tournament on Feb. 18 in Bullitt County, the Eminence archery team has now qualified for the Archery State Championships for the second year in a row.

    The squad - composed of two juniors, two sophomores, one freshman and 13 middle schoolers - is in its third year of competition and is already making a name for itself at the regional and state levels.

    "I was really proud of our kids," coach Dewayne Douglas said. "That (advancing to state) was our goal going in."
