  • No dead end for Main Street

    General Manager

    The New Castle Main Street/Renaissance program is safe – for now.

    In a narrow 3-2 vote Thursday, Jan. 24, the New Castle City Commission voted to sign the annual letter of commitment, allowing the city’s Main Street Manager to proceed with the Main Street recertification process.

    Commissioners Tim Royalty and Tammy Sharp voted for the city to not sign the letter, while Commissioners Wanda Thurman and Juanita Raisor and Mayor Judy Diederich voted to continue the letter.

  • Powell to celebrate 67th birthday at Homestead

    The pictures and trinkets in John Powell's tiny room don't necessarily tell his story.

    The 66-year-old Henry County native was born with a defect on the right side of his body, which forced him to wear a brace most of his younger years.

    "I remember when I was little, I wore that brace all the way up to my hips," he said.

    Crutches also supported the young Powell, but by high school he says he had shucked the aids and was able to walk unassisted.

    Now, however, the 66-year-old wishes he could get around better.

  • Thank you for pool vote

    As a resident of the great city of Eminence I would like to say to my mayor and city council, thank you for showing us that our kids count. Thank you for voting to open the pool.

    I'd also like to thank Making Waves for all the hard work that they put into helping make this possible for all the kids in our community.

    I feel that everyone young and old will greatly benefit from this. Our kids have an opportunity to make some great memories with friends and family and we parents will be spared our sanity.

  • FRYSC also thankful for help

    The Henry County Family Resource Center and Youth Services Center would like to thank every church, school, business, organization, and individual that helped to make this years Christmas for Kids program a success. 167 children were adopted out, and with financial donations we were able to shop for the remaining 36 giving us a total of 203 children that were served. Again, thanks for helping make this another successful Christmas for Kids and thanks for the continued support you give to our programs throughout the year.

  • Community Calendar for January 30, 2008

    Wednesday, January 30

    Girls in Action (GAs) of Cropper Baptist Church meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. The program is open to girls through age 12.

    Karate classes will be held at the Community Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

    Childrens Story and Craft hour every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pleasureville Christian Church. Community Library open to the public from 1 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

    Thursday, January 31

    TOPS 298 will meet at Orville Baptist Church. Weigh in 4:30 p.m. and meeting at 5 p.m. New members welcome.

  • Head of the Class - 5 EIS teachers earn certification

    In a grueling one-year process, five Eminence Independent teachers found they - like their students - have many lessons to learn. All achieved National Board Certification, a rigorous multi-faceted process that gives them one of the highest teaching distinctions in the nation.

    "This is a great staff," said Eminence Principal Dr. Steve Frommeyer, of all the district's teachers. And all the teachers being certified demonstrates this."

  • Thanks to all for help in making pool vote possible

    A special thanks goes to the Eminence City Council for their Jan. 14, unanimous vote, to reopen the swimming pool. They also created a pool commission to oversee the repairs and operation.

    Also, special thanks goes to the parents of the children of Eminence and Henry County for signing petitions (more than 700 signatures), for attending three Making Waves meetings (average attendance 50), numerous phone calls and letters and volunteering for fundraisers. This exceptional community support has made all the difference to the city council.

  • Are we really free?

    Everyone's screaming free country, freedom. Others scream smoke free. If it's a free country why does everything cost so much. I could never figure out what we are free from. Some say the military is fighting for freedom. One hundred years later they are still saying they are fighting for freedom. What an excuse to kill foreign people. Some days it feels like house arrest. There's only so far you can go because it either cost too much or you run out of land. It seems that the way everything is going they don't find a way to charge us for the air we breathe.
