  • Small businesses are a big deal

    By Lance Minnis

When I was growing up, we lived in a large old farmhouse with a nice open wrap-around porch.

I must have painted that house five times as a kid, because the weather boards were so old, paint would no longer stick, and years of accumulated paint would chip off between one summer and the next.

Of course, my father would rouse me out of bed early on Saturday, and we would get a good start on some painting project or other. He would often leave me alone to complete it, and then check my work when I was finished.

  • Fall doesn’t mean a slow down in county activities

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is constantly looking for ways to make our chamber an association that businesses, churches, non-profits and individuals can look to for not just information, but also for support of our communities.

  • Baptist Northeast award is well earned

This year I celebrated my 10th year of providing OB/GYN care to those in our community and surrounding counties. I chose to practice in La Grange because the community was similar to the small town in which I was raised in eastern Kentucky. My goal was to bring quality care from the “city” to our community so our residents didn’t have to drive to town for excellent care.

  • A letter of thanks

  • Kentucky blazes new education path

Early this month, we took another major step forward with the release of the latest round of school accountability scores.

Our goal is to truly see where our students stand against their counterparts across the country and around the world.  Rather than testing whether they have a good understanding of the material, we want to know if they are on the way to being ready for college and a career – the benchmark that counts most.

  • Children steal the show on holidays

    By Candy Clarke

How do they do it?! These tiny little creatures we call children always manage to steal the show. Holidays are no exception. Two years ago, while visiting my oldest brother and his family in Florida for Thanksgiving; I watched in wonderment as my brother’s only grandchild stole the show and everyone’s heart.

  • It’s okay for children to be around funerals

    Michael Duncan

I first saw the little boy about thirty minutes before the funeral was scheduled to begin. I guessed him to be six or seven years old. He was standing at the edge of the chapel, looking toward the open casket. As I watched, he slowly approached the casket where his mother stood looking at the body of her father.

“I thought you were with your dad,” the mother said.

  • Thanks to, sympathy for all veterans

    Submitted by Jim Greisch

    Nov. 11, another Veterans Day.

Fewer older veterans. More younger vets

“Thank you for your service.”  Most vets hear that almost every day on television, directed toward someone on camera. Many others hear from someone on first meeting, or from a relative,  friend, or even a co-worker.

The word service has many meanings. A lot of vets have manned duty stations during peacetime… quietly doing hum-drum chores, standing guard and going on liberty. (Yes, I was a sailor.)
