  • Saving energy saves money

    As a concerned teen, saving energy is very important to do. I read about a very simple way to save energy. It barely takes any time at all and can even save people money.

    Saving energy is a very important thing in our society today. Doing this is extremely simple. If you turn off a fluorescent light for five seconds you save more energy than is required to turn on the light. If you leave the light off for five to 15 minutes you might even save money.

  • Main Street brings benefits to the city

    I recently learned that the New Castle City Commission is considering dropping out of the Main Street Program. I think this would be a serious mistake. During my tenure as Mayor and Commissioner, the city's participation in Main Street brought tremendous benefits to the city and continues to do so.

  • Thanks for help with cafeteria project

    I first moved here in May 2007 to live with my uncle George and aunt Lee Ann. They live in Eminence. My little brother and I had already been here on visits. You see we knew we were moving here because my mother had terminal cancer. She wanted us to feel comfortable as we could before we came on a permanent basis. She died June 27, 2007. Our world seemed to turn upside down. I have never felt so lost. I started school in August at Eminence as an eighth grader.

  • Reclaiming lost memories

    As recent graduates of Eminence High School, we remember being told often, if not every day, "Always do the right thing" and "Always make good choices."

    Looking back on our high school days, we realize that the city of Eminence did not make a good choice or "do the right thing" by closing the Eminence swimming pool and taking away our recreational activities.

    On behalf of the officers and employees of PBI Bank, I want to say "Thank You" to everyone who contributed to our 15th annual Christmas for Kids party at Eastern Elementary."

    With your generous contributions we were able to provide toys, goodie bags, pizza and Santa for 103 children who were considered to be in need of a Merry Christmas that they might not otherwise have enjoyed.

  • Landmark sale came as a surprise to many

    I often say that change isn't such a bad thing. Change shakes things up a little bit. Change keeps us from holding the line for the status quo. It keeps us on our toes. It makes life ... interesting. I got a taste of that last week.

    I came to work Thursday morning and was greeted with a short message from a fellow editor - check your e-mail now. She'd forwarded to me a link to an article that would shape the rest of our day.

  • Santa letters bring back holiday memories

    I have, for years, enjoyed typing up children's letters to Santa each year.

    That particular task manages to somehow be one of the hardest and funniest things we do in community newspapers.

    Inevitably, there are a few letters written by the younger kids that we cannot read or interpret, no matter how many folks we show the letter to. That is, however, part of their charm - the jumble of letters that makes perfect sense to the writer, but leaves us scratching our heads.

  • City of Eminence has plenty to be proud of

    My name is Shawn Bright. I am an Eminence City Council member and I have tried to write a letter to the editor every so often to keep you up to date about city happenings. It has been one year since I was elected, so I thought it was a good time to give an overview on some of the things that happened in the last twelve months. First, I would like to say that being a city council member has been a very interesting job and it comes with a lot of responsibilities. Being an elected official is a life changing experience.
