Today's Opinions

  • Interim used to better prepare for new legislative session

When it comes to the legislative process, most of the public’s attention is understandably focused on the first several months of the year, when the General Assembly is in session and new laws are adopted.

  • This year will there be a new you?

Is there a person on the planet that hasn’t made a New Year’s resolution and then failed to follow through? Setting goals may be the easy part, but turning those goals into results? Well, we all know how hard that can be.

Whether you’re hoping to shed a few pounds, step up your level of exercise or kick that smoking habit once and for all — you can take steps to improve your chances of success. Here are just a few ideas.

  • The birth of Christ

    The Birth of Christ

For many years, First Presbyterian Church in Eminence has hosted a Candlelight Communion Service on Christmas Eve.

It’s a simple service — carols alternating with scripture readings and some special music — held in our beautifully decorated little church. Following the carols and readings, Communion is celebrated.

  • New year, new session

It is hard to believe 2017 is nearly upon us. After the whirlwind of Thanksgiving, Christmas is nearly here. Lights are on the trees and candles are in the windows and children are writing their lists to Santa. It is the season of giving and a perfect time for communities to come together to help those in need.

  • A Henry County holiday

By Holly Kinderman, executive director of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Our little towns in Henry County have had their holiday kick off festivities and the towns are all starting to light up. It’s so pretty to see all the lights and decorations.

We have had some wonderful community programs and events going on.

  • My recipe for a happy holiday season

The holidays provide us with a great excuse to eat, drink and be merry as though we’re fattening up our friends, our family and ourselves like the Christmas goose.

I have not yet taken the plunge, but I’ve long been curious about the proverbial wassail and figgy pudding of traditional carols.

  • Steadfast presence in the community since 1876

You hold in your hands an early Christmas present.

This is a free sample of the “Henry County Local,” delivered to everyone in the county this week as a way to introduce you to the product if you’ve never read it, or to remind you of what our pages contain each week, if you haven’t read it lately.

I consider it an honor to work here, continuing a tradition of service to the community that began in the late 1800s.
