Feeding the poor steals from the...

Like the drone of a furnace in the background, pretense has trickled out of our nation’s capital for so long that no one ever pays much attention. The steady hum of hypocrisy is just a mundane fact of life. Recently, however, the posturing has become downright circus-like.

Lady Cats' win over Carroll...

Though the baseball, softball and track seasons are now over, there were highlights aplenty.

1.  The Henry County Lady Cats defeated the Carroll County Panthers in the district tournament to qualify for the regional tournament.

The Lady Cats had only three seniors on this year’s team and no juniors but showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future as they knocked the cover off the ball most of the season. The team had an up and down season that included a lot of good hitting and fielding miscues.

The New Castle Chiefs youth football team signups will be July 8, 9 and 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. behind the Henry County Board of Education. Students in grades 2-6 are eligible. For more information contact Parker Howard at (502) 396-5573.

1800s doctor removed 22-pound...

Kentucky Dr. Ephraim McDowell didn’t fear the impossible.

On Monday, the good doctor and surgeon — who reached fame during the 1800s — shared his tale of removing a 22-pound tumor with members of the Henry County Historical Society.

Played by Henry Dowell for Kentucky Chataqua, McDowell recounts a life-or-death surgery performed in Danville before the invention of anesthesia in what was the world’s first recorded ovariotomy.

Each year, 25,000 Kentuckians – nearly 70 a day – are given the one diagnosis nobody ever wants to hear from their doctor: Cancer.

If there is a silver lining surrounding this sizeable cloud, it is that we are seeing true progress in making sure this word is said much less often.  Nationally, deaths are down a fifth from their peak in 1991, and most types of cancers – but not all – are in decline.

Six local players make All-District team

Six local athletes made the 31st District All-District tournament teams last week.

In the girls’ tournament Lady Cats Madison Rabourn, Aly Stanley and Krista DeBurger made the team. Kelsie Craigmyle of the Eminence Warriors also made the team.

Alex Miles and Stephen Archer were named to the boys team.

Once a Cat, now a travelling...

Former Henry County Lady Cat softball player Ally Vaughn recently completed her

freshman year as a first basemen and outfielder at the University of Louisville.

Playing for a Division I school has allowed her to travel the country.

“My college experience as a player and student has been great,” Vaughn said. “I have made a lot of new friends and gotten to experience a lot of things. I got to travel the U.S. with the softball team from Las Vegas to Florida to New York City, to Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Notre Dame.

Local Golfers competing in...

Alex Hadden and Isaac Klempner are back on the Mussleman-Dunne Junior Golf Tour for a second season. Hadden has competed in three events and Klempner in four events in the boys 11-12 age division.

MacKenzie Peyton also competed in the girls’ championship division in four tour events.

Hadden won two of the tournaments he has entered, shooting 75 at Stone Crest Golf Course to win the KIA Classic on May 18 and 19. He shot another 75 at Seneca Golf Course on May 25 and 26 to take top honors.

Sisters get 20 days for missing...

Henry Circuit Court Judge Karen Conrad didn’t mince words last week with two sisters who missed random drug screens.

Sabrina Walker’s public defender said the young woman did not hear her color when she called in for her drug screen.

Sabrina Walker also is facing flagrant nonsupport charges and was concerned about being able to keep her job should Conrad send her to jail for missing the screen, asking for work release jail time.

Conrad admonished Sabrina Walker.
