Boot camp takes sustainability into the kitchen

The James Beard Foundation hosted a chef boot camp in Louisville this week focusing on regional food systems and taking the sustainability issue into the kitchen where Henry County farmers’ products matters most.

Two Louisville chefs, Kathy Cary of Lilly’s and Levon Wallace of Proof on Main will join a dozen other chefs from across the nation to participate in the boot camp.

Remember our veterans’ commitment to duty

For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom.

It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years.  It is believed to have begun in the South, when Confederate widows decorated not only the graves of their loved ones but also those of Union soldiers, knowing their families were grieving as well.

Patrick and Susan Perkinson announce the birth of their daughter, Bobbi Grace Perkinson born Feb. 27, 2013, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. She weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches long.
Grandparents are Betty Smith, Columbia and the late Bobby Smith; Gary and Bonnie Perkinson, La Grange; and Pat Perkinson of New Castle.

Comer takes hemp to the hill

After a three-day blitz on Washington, D.C., this month, James Comer, Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, felt assured industrial hemp had enough support for legalization.

Jonathan Miller, member of the Kentucky Industrial Hemp Commission, former state treasurer and deputy political director for the Clinton/Gore 1992 presidential campaign, traveled with Comer and State Sen. Paul Hornback for nonpartisan talks.

Warriors fall to Owen, 17-1

The Eminence Warriors softball team fell to the Owen Co. Rebels 17-1 in three innings Monday night in the first round of the district tournament.

The Lady Rebels pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of eight Warrior errors to score 10 runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning.

The Warriors scored a run in the top of the third when Lyndsay Craigmyle walked with one out. Kelsie Craigmyle followed with a double to left field to put runners on second and third. Savannah Mertz drove in the run with a groundout to give the Warriors there only run.

Free will pays off or you pay for it

The recent events in Cleveland at first left me perplexed.

Ariel Castro held three women captive, one for at least 10 years, and his neighbors never knew it nor suspected it.

Castro allegedly fathered a child with one of his captives, made the woman give birth in a kiddie pool and not one neighbor heard a thing.

Residents who lived in the neighborhood never suspected a thing from the bus driver/musician who played baseball with children at local parks.

Over the years, improved technology has made many new homes more energy efficient, but you shouldn’t shy away or move from an older home just for better energy efficiency. You can upgrade your older home to make it energy efficient.
Prior to the mid-20th century, fully automated, controlled and mechanized heating, cooling and ventilation systems did not exist. Instead, older homes had passive and manual features incorporated into their design to meet heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

Stay productive, not busy

Two weeks ago, I went riding on my new bicycle out of Eminence and into the countryside. My thoughts as rambling as my bike, I let my mind wander across the scenery, and whatever fancies occurred as I rode.

As I came cycling over a hill, I saw a man on his expensive zero turn riding mower cutting the grass of an enormous yard. At least 20 acres in size, the poor man must cut that grass at least once per week, at the cost of several hours each time.
